Are there any "Beginner Illusions" that are easy and relativly cheap to build, so I could perform some?

Check out Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It has a few stage illusions easy enough to build at home. In fact, I have one on my back porch right now.

By the power of the internet, I summon Jim Gerrish to this thread to expound the virtues of his PVC Pipe Illusions books, which I myself own and enjoy!

The Subtrunk would be a good start.
And I would greatly suggest, too, the MArk Wilson's. I started with that. |

Mark Wilsons book is where I started! Such a great book! It does have stage illusions in the back of the book plus a lot of the fundamental moves in magic.

By all means feel free to visit The Magic Nook and study the PVC Pipe Illusions, which I frequently used as prototypes before building the more permanent illusions from more elegant materials. They are usable in their PVC form, but if you use it a great deal, you may wish to make it more permanent and a little classier. The advantage to PVC Illusions is in transportation (the illusions come apart for packing), lightness of weight, low cost and easy construction (sort of like Tinker Toys for grown up magicians). There, EsnRedshirt, I hope you are happy.

I would suggest you pick up David Seebach's book "So you want to be an Illusionist." It's got some great advise for beginners. I wish I had it as a reference when I was getting started ... would have saved me thousands of dollars.
Trust me on this one ... Steve |
