This may not be the right place for this, but I recently saw an ad on a site for a magic show describing the magic as "hip." I did not know there was a such thing as "hip" magic. I assume it's not magic done on the magician's hip, but I don't what hip magic would be. Any thoughts?

In another thread someone said he didn't like spelling tricks (with cards) - I do some really Jaw-dropping spelling tricks. Obviously what he meant is that he didn't like the spelling tricks HE KNEW OR HAD SEEN. When I asked if he knew any of mine - dead silence.
Anyway, he said, and I'll quote: "We as magicians need to be faster, stronger and more impossible than ever. Spelling tricks just won't cut it anymore in a world of 3D effects, computer effects, space travel, Criss Angel etc." I'm assuming that this gentleman (I believe a "newbie" but can't be sure) is an example of the "hip" (or attempts at "hip") being discussed here. He was/is of course soooo wrong!

I saw that, yes, and the first thing I thought of was that a normal spectator would not know that spelling tricks are not "hip." To a layman, a spelling trick can look quite magical, hip or not.

I wouldn't do a spelling trick that didn't look quite natural. As with anything else, selectivity is important. Why in the world would I do an effect - of any kind - that wasn't quite magical, when I know literally thousands that ARE???

That's a very good point. The whole idea is, after all, MAGIC.
Halo Aces Royal, for example. That's very magical |

I think that there are a lot of things that you can do to become more hip.
Just look at actors and musicians. They dress cool and hip, use cool and hip haircuts and grooming etc, also they go to the gym, keeping fit and building bigger muscles which looks good in clothes, like t-shirts etc. I think that magicians needs to become more hip as well. Dressing hipper, using hipper subjects for presentational plots, build bigger and stronger muscles which looks awesome in t-shirts etc. Also, more direct effects, just effect, no spelling, counting or long procedures. Just my two cents. Best wishes, Lord Wallmotto. |

Please tell me what is a "hipper subject for a presentational plot." Please do it in your least condescending manner.
By the way, how do you know I don't dress hip? |

Here's some hip--releasing an effect you have already released, but calling it 2.0

My grandmother was working on a hip trick, kind of a broken and restored type of thing...she only has worked out the first half of the trick. Her magic words were "help I've fallen and can't get up"

You want hip?
Pick up a borrowed, shuffled deck at a party or a bar and do Lorayne's Four Second Wonder, Revised from Jaw Droppers. Then take a sip of your drink and continue mingling. I promise you you'll be the hippest guy in the place. |

Sounds like someone has a terrible case of "celebrity worship."

I'll be frank: I consider Harry Lorayne to be a living legend of the art and that is based upon the FACT that Harry Lorayne revolutionized magic instruction. Additionally, legends like Vernon spoke VERY highly of Mr. Lorayne's skill. Would you dare accuse the Professor of hero worship? No, you wouldn't. Magicfish is not given to empty praise. You are a long time user here according to your post count and I would wager you HAVE read other posts by magicfish. If he likes a routine it is GOOD and he does NOT base his judgment upon whether or not he likes the creator. It's an open forum and obviously you have the right to speak your mind so long as you do not intentionally offend/flame or whatever term you choose. IMHO it's your loss mate; if you choose not to perform any Lorayne material then fine. But accusing a VERY knowledgeable magician like magic fish of having a case of hero worship is pointless and borders on insulting to him AND Harry Lorayne. |

Thanks Vlad.
It was not my intention to derail this thread, but to illustrate that for me, it's the effect that's hip. A guy with the latest hairstyle and clothes can quickly become a fool if his magic isn't up to snuff. But a regular, unassuming, gentleman can stun an entire room and very much be the "hippest, coolest" guy in attendance with a smooth, honed, magical sequence. I chose to mention Mr. Lorayne's routine to illustrate this point- a favourite of mine. |
