The show is 70 miles away with a 7:00 am call time so......
Do you spend the night at a 50 dollar motel (to make a 8:00 show) or be on the road at 4:50 am, and beat traffic saving 50 dollars? ------ Which is the lessor of two evils. I mean, I'm not a fisherman here. Let's have a vote.

Personally, I wouldn't get a hotel for a 70 mile drive unless you have a ton of stuff to set up for your show. To me, a 70 mile drive is nothing, but I don't live in CA.

I get up early, or perhaps don't bother going to bed the night before. Seventy miles is a bit local over here! Either way, enjoy.

Cf. Gerry's post! For me, it would depend on the geography(mountainous area) or the traffic situation.
You're talking about a club date, and driving from home. Of course, in most of my experience I was on the road, so I traveled in my RV, and would make the jump the night before.

I get up early all the time to drive to commitments. Two points...1) you are going to sleep better in your own bed 2) Leaving early in the morning and planning your route, you will miss most if not all of the traffic. Of course, check out the vechile throughly and allow for a breakdown. Yes, I know I am annal but I have been there and done that.
As point in fact, I have a state Cross Country meet to do next weekend. It is a 175 mile drive and I have to be there at 8 am. I will get up at 5 am. and be on the road by 5:30. There is only one town and I will be well through it before anyone gets up. The plus side is I save $100 for motel room. Richard

For 70 miles I would do the getting up early routine. But that's because I elect not to travel too far. But friends of mine down south drive long distances to neighboring states. For example, one magician who lives in South Carolina also books shows in North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. So he juggles his schedule very carefully, to accommodate overnight stays in motels.

Teh last few years like Dick I traveled mostly with my RV and much rather arrive the night before and wake up at the gig.
however if not in the RV 70 miles is nothing to drive in the morning. however if it were 3 or 4 or 5 hour drive I would rather go the night before and not be rushed in the morning. one last thought. it also would affect my decision if I had another gig later in the day or other plans. this would definitely affect my planning.

A 70 mile drive in California is a normal ninety minute trip for anyone; no big deal.
My BIGGEST fear is an accident on the freeway that results in closing the freeway for a long period of time resulting in missing the event altogether; I shake at the thought. Even if the freeway is closed for fifteen minutes by the CHP for a tow trick to hook up a car and tow it away will result in hours of residual back up on the road. Jay; it's not beating the normal rush hour traffic; it's the normal rush hour accident that will delay you and even worse, most freeway closing accidents happen early in the morning during rush hour, or just before rush hour; tanker trucks and eighteen wheelers turning over because of tired drivers; major chain reaction accidents caused by fog in the morning this time of year and people jumping off freeway overpasses have occurred early in the morning during rush hour causing major problems and missed appointments. I'd pay the fifty dollars; wake up at 6, dress and have breakfast; get there at 7 to set up and perform with no driving fatigue or traffic trauma. |

I'm curious!!! When I started on the road in the mid '60s, Mom and Pop Motels averaged (in the midwest) $6.00 a night. (and, they weren't "hot pillow" joints!
I quit the road in '03, after 45 years with motor homes. I did a 'final triumphant" tour in '08, 'cuz I was bored. It was a winter tour in the Dakotas/Minnesota. I left the RV at home and planned to motel it. Motels averaged (then) $50 to $60. I just did a "book signing and lecture "tour". The Mom & Pops have almost "disappeared" As a "roadie", I'm not looking for a motel with a pool, a "health club" etc. I want a good bed and a good shower. Motels on the route averaged $90 and higher. By offering a continental breakfast and a pool, etc. their rates are half again what they were, just a few years ago.

Did you read the whole thread??
I'm an old roadie. I've always come home with the grouch bag full. I only mentioned the above as a matter of history. I've done school tours as a performer for 45 years. I've booked other talent for the "office". I've managed phone rooms, and booked dates for several major illusion shows. I've booked and promoted circuses and was producing clown for a season. I've managed a carnie Ape Show for the late Tim Deremer. --I aint no first o' May, or a JCL either. When I started a loaf of bread was 10 cents, gas was 17 cents.rope was 50 cents for 50 feet, and a TT was 25 cents! I never bought a car or motor home on "time" in my life.

Not till Thursday morning.
I'll have to cancel my red carpet movie premier at Grauman's and the after party in Beverly Hills, Wednesday night.

Jay! I was replying to Diddot's "dig".
Two of youse guys :snuck in" between our posts~ When I started with the school bureaus, I had a station wagon. After three seasons, I bought a motor home! --I could jump to the next town in late afternoon or early evening, and usually park in the school parking lot. The RV was self contained, so I only used RV Parks, occasionally. The RV was great. It made life on the road very practical!
