Hi, I'm interested in hypnosis but have absolutely zero experience with it. Where should I get started? What can you recommend to start off with?

Proper training.

But where do I find this training? Books, DVDs, lectures?

If you were training to be a doctor, lawyer, auto mechanic or plumber would you expect to do so with books, DVDs or lectures? Find a qualified, certified training facility or private training program. What type of hypnosis is your interest? Tell us more about your interests.

Good point. As of now, my interest in hypnosis spans to just about anything and everything. Everything about it is of interest. I've done very limited looking into it at the past, (this was probably almost a year ago) and as I said, the research was very limited. I got a job at a haunted house recently and was doing card tricks for some of the other employees. One of them turned out to actually be a hypnotist. The only effect (sorry if they shouldn't be called effects, if they should be known as something else, let me know) I saw him do was where he made a man's thumbs move together no matter how much the man fought it. He told me different stories of gigs and making people do various things such as forgetting numbers or even thinking they are animals. This is what really sparked my interest in the idea of hypnosis, but as of now, I can't say my interests are limited to anything in particular.

A hypnotist is a skilled practitioner. First, I suggest you get a working knowledge of hypnosis. This can come from standard hypnosis certification. Check with the national guild or look for a private trainer or coach. Nothing to do with performance or entertainment hypnosis. (Gerry Klein is close to you in Florida, I also do personal training/coaching). I always suggest becoming trained in working with clients, learning all of the levels or phases of hypnosis, how to handle and administer testing, induction, proper suggestions and of course concluding hypnosis and how to handle any negative reactions, responses or abreactions. This includes safety and potential dangers or areas of concern. Also a working knowledge of separating facts from misconception, urban legend and myth. Only once the foundational elements and training are in place should you move on to adding and combining the entertainment elements to this foundation. A few other important pointers: 1. Understand there is a huge difference between proper hypnosis training and "hypnosis training for magicians" 2. Books, DVDs and other can enhance your learning experience but should not be considered "proper training" 3. Do not even attempt to try or "practice" hypnosis on family or friends. It usually will not "work" or create disappointment and discouragement 4. Proper training will include you having subjects to work on and practice with 5. Stay off of youtube. It is not a part of proper training. 6. See as many live stage hypnosis shows as you can 7. Be sure you are insured with hypnosis insurance before performing in public 8. Understand there are many layers and dynamics to a good hypnotic performance 9. A good hypnosis performance is not in any way about you, the hypnotist, it should always star and highlight your volunteer subjects There is a start for you. |

Thank you. I'll look into actual training rather than books and videos like I've done with other areas of magic. I'll keep these pointers in mind. I'm not really in a hurry, but how long does it normally take for someone to really be able to successfully perform hypnosis?

Of course this depends on how much you actually get to apply, practice, perform and take action with it all. On the other hand I've seen guys, regularly, that still are having troubles, trying to cut corners and are terrible after five years. |

Start with books.
No need to jump in with expensive training. Research research research. At least that is what I have read.

Start with Anthony Jacquin's Reality is Plastic and perhaps Johnathon Chase's Deeper and Deeper. Then watch as many shows as you can. Live is best but some hypnotist have put up full shows on Youtube, such as Justin Tranz. Then go for it. As for length, I did my first show a week after getting my first book, but that was accidental and perhaps not recommended. With live training you could do a show within a month of starting the journey. But you won't be good until you have a number of shows under your belt. Welcome to this wee corner of the internet. Hope you stay around and learn and contribute. Tony
