Legendary New Orleans rock and roll hall of fame pianist, composer, arranger, etc etc died today of a heart attack in Spain while on tour at 77 yrs old. His hits are too numerous to contain in a column; but suffice to say he wrote a lot of signature hits for other musicians, eg Ernie K Doe's 'mother in law', Irma Thomas 'Ruler of my heart", Glen Campbell's 'Southern Nights', Lee Dorsey's 'workin' in a coal mine".... I have to stop here and let others add in. Lynn

How good was Allen Toussaint? Here he is playing The Weight with Elvis Costello, Ray LaMontagne, Levon Helm, Nick Lowe, Richard Thompson, and Larry Campbell.

Allen brings that little something extra special to his verse.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats
