BeThePlunk, I'm 68 as well, and I still buy my rope from an old and established magic manufacturer and store, called Abbott's Magic. They sell the real magicians rope as used by myself and many magician for years.
This is real Magicians Rope, cored and very pliable, to work well for use in rope tricks. http://www.abbottmagic.com/Rope-216-Foot......oryId=-1 http://www.abbottmagic.com/Rope-300-ft-1......oryId=-1 Don't want the core, simply pull the 3 cotton strings out and you have a coreless sheath only. Yes, it is off white, not bleached, the real color off cotton rope. All other rope is modern alternatives that I found don't work as well as the original cotton rope. Money wasted for me. Buy the other offerings at your own risk. Quote: Abbott's is a good supplier of rope. The can sell a how spool. They have 2 sizes. This is where I buy my rope for C & R effects. I washed, for example, my "Nightmare" ropes and, my "One-Two-One" rope when I did the weekly laundromat visit on the road. I'm still using them. If you just bought stock in the ELMERS GLUE COMPANY, I suppose that you could use glue if you want to. However, it'a an unnecessary step. I don't bother to separate the strands of the sheath either

The tuck method is what I use exclusively. Quick, easy, looks great, and lasts as long as you need.

Thanks very much for the education, all. Let's leave it at that.

I bought some "end of your rope solution" at a magic shop. Great stuff. Had lightly dipped the ends in glue before. This stuff works better. Very clean.

Hi jc!
Interesting!!! I hadn't heard of "end of your rope solution", but, I hadn't been looking for a solution!!! I've been tucking in the ends of rope for about 40 years, and, it works! It takes about 2 minutes per end. I wrote up the procedure above.

Yes, Yin Howe, great video! I've used white glue before but never the (much better) glue then cut technique you demonstrate. Thanks!

Yes yin_howe, the video is very informative and quite valuable to a rope worker.
Perfectly done with to the point, spot on visuals. Excellent job! |

I have used dozens of methods to finish the ends of different types of ropes. Yes, traditional “Magician’s Rope” is a kernmantle construction which just means it has a sheath and a core. If you’re doing C&R you can remove the core and the sheath will retain most of the thickness of the rope but will be much easier to cut.
For Professors Nightmare, I have been using 1/2” Solid Braid Nylon Rope for decades. It shows up better for the larger crowds I work with and it is VERY durable when being examined. It also has the benefit of being an actual rope they might recognize from the hardware store lending to it’s credibility. Virtually NO ONE has ever seen magician’s rope anywhere. The nylon is much better for the sliding moves. Magician’s Rope has a rougher finish and will wear out sooner. The Nylon also has the advantage of being able to be cut with a hot knife which seals the ends at the same time. I usually make up a few sets at the same time and they easily last for over a decade under heavy usage..

I do a variation of the tuck method. I cut an inch and a half from the core and pinch the sheath in a pair of tweezers and push it into the rope. I then stitch the end, leaving the thread knot on the inside and running a few stitches, knotting on the inside of the tucked end.
