Hi All,
I have a question / would like to know people's thoughts. I have Levitation 360 illusion. When performing a levitation illusion what do people think, is it just enough to have the person levitated from the ground to waist height, pass the hoop over the person and then lower back down to ground level. Or, is it better/more impressive to raise the person from the ground, spin them around the magicians body, do the hoop and then lower then to the ground ? I'm not sure whether the spin around the body adds anything more to the effect, and proves trickier to hide the different parts of the method and therefore attracts more risk. Or whether from an audience's point of view the fact that she has levitated from the ground to waist height and the hoop is magical enough ? Please can you let me know your thoughts. Many thanks in advance. |

Most people seldom see this illusion "live". I would expect levitating the person, passing the hoop, and lowering them would be more than sufficient. Since I'm aware of the method, it's hard not to think like a magician - but I think the body spin (rotation) tends to hint at the method.
Just my 2 cents. Jim |

Having your assistant go up and down is enough, if done correctly. There's a lot of terrible presentations online were the magicians are fumbling around with the hoop or being clumsy while removing the supports causing embarrasing swaying that ruins the illusion. The levitation should always have focus and direction. It should convey that the powers of the magician are initiating the levitation and nothing else.
The presentation of the illusion from start to finish using precise attention to details such as (story plot, gestures, music, stage scenery, smoke, and so on..) should remove all doubt from the spectator that wires or any other mechanical lift mechanism are at work. When in doubt, keep it short and simple. Heck, you don't even need to make the assistant rise. In the spectator's mind seeing a person float without any visible support is levitating. I always hated watching a sword suspension when I was young. I knew the last sword was somehow still connected to the supposedly floating assistant. I would always shout in my mind "remove the sword!!" in hopes real magic would be witnessed. So for me, the difference really matters. Anyhow, I think I strayed a bit from the main question. |

Hi Jimhlou & jcmagicman,
Thank you for both your posts...your thoughts are very valuable to me, as I am debating whether to rotate the girl around me or not. I think the round the body can look very clumsy and requires moves that don't look or feel natural. JC - I agree with your thoughts on Sword Suspension, hence I have never performed any type of suspension illusion for the simple fact it's pretty obvious how it's done. Thanks again for your input. |

I think the assistant going around the magician, only works if she floats through the hoop at the same time.

I think that the rotation around the magician has not so much added value for a strong/ beautiful levitation. It's all about the the PERFORMANCE (search for Richiardi on YouTube; his levitation AND his (Broomstick-) suspension).
STOP thinking as magicians, try to understand what the spectator thinks when he sees it live for the first time. For a few years now, Hans Klok performs in every show a very professional Sword Suspension. It would be very interesting for you that you could (live) FEEL the respons of the audience; that's where it's all about. |

I have to agree that I don't find the going 'round he body adds anything at all of substance to the effect, and has been mentioned before can possibly tip method.
There is often beauty to be found in simplicity, and I think that beauty is the essence of a good levitation effect. It's always been my favorite. |
