Hi guys,
Went out again this sunday. First time for quite a few months. Nerves and self doubt have been an issue. I travelled to another city to watch my girlfriend compete in her chosen sport. (She has so far won six gold medals, 1 silver medal with more events to come - however that's another story. 😀). Whilst here I decided I had to get out and busk - no excuses. A great learning experience!!! Walked up and down aimlessly looking for a spot to set up. Decided enough is enough and chose a location and set up my table. Once the table was set up I immediately felt more comfortable. It took 5 minutes before the first person stopped. Busked for 90 mins performed 5-6 short shows, even practiced a new effect on 4 occasions which allowed me to learn the Mercury card fold helps me with the art of misdirection. What I learnt... three key lessons! Lesson 1 To be serious about improving. I need to busk regularly - there is no substitute for performing live in the street. Over the last few months I have continued to practice, and I started to know lines/patter down pat. However on Sunday my hat lines were terrible, and my sets weren't quite as cohesive as the last time I busked. Lesson learnt - perform regularly, practice in the streets. Lesson 2 - Make noise & be visible Next time I'm taking my stick to whack on the table between tricks, and before performing. When I set up - within 5 minutes another magician all amped up, set up literally only 30 metres from me. He was out in the open, quite comfortable in the environment - and just beat his stick saying "watch this". He had big crowds, whilst my spot was less open and hence I had smaller crowds. I chose the spot for that reason - as I knew my crowds would be smaller. This day for me was just about getting past the nerves and getting out there. Later I watched the other guy who was quite polished and very relaxed. Lesson 3 - slow down. Enough said. What's working - my jokes. 😀 Every time I go out I seem to be adding at least one more joke into my act. This time I introduced two jokes - both generated laughs - and both slipped in seamlessly into my modest show. Heading out again this Saturday - weather permitting. |

Glad to see you're still at it, I always enjoy reading tales from the street.

SugarRayRick; I agree with MVoss, that I always enjoy reading tales from the street.
And every so often I add to my own computer-written file of experiences from the streets. Reading them over years later helps recapture feelings and events that happened. Last weekend I had an Elvis impersonator about 40 metres away with his amp, and in the other direction about 40 metres away was another guitarist with his amp going. Being in the middle made the sound a bit of a muddle. The Elvis fellow quit after about 1 1/2 hours and the other one went on for about another 1 1/2 more! It was nice to be back to the usual quiet when they had both knocked off.
The presentation makes the magic.

The local football match was being played the day I was busking. At one point approx 100 supporters marched by my table all chanting and cheering. It forced me to pause a show whilst they passed. Lucky I had a patient audience. 😀
I enjoyed busking in a different city, and though I am a weekend warrior at this caper, I look forward to building up a tight and professional looking show - to have the ability to perform it wherever there's a crowd (and where I can get away with it). |
