I was working at a wedding today, doing walk-about close-up magic. Somehow I managed to spill red wine on the bride's mother's dress!!! (first time in over 20 years in the business) I was very calm about it as was the lady in question. I suggested she wipe it with white wine and told her that if there was any stain I would cover the cleaning bill. Fortunately the stain came out after a quick dash to the ladies room with some soda water. I wasn't phased by it (not as much as the brides mum anyway) as I have $10 Million public liability insurance. I just wondered what sort of protection other magicians have. This incedent also reminded me just how important insurance like this is.

Bummer,
Way to stay cool under pressure though. That's a tough situation. It's the sign of a pro to stay cool though. Kudos. Keith

I'm only small fry, but it's standard to carry around three million insurance for small businesses in Australia. In my state, they insist on insurance if you have a rabbit (a noxious creature here, that has to be sterilised and registered if you use it in a show) and you'd have to be nuts if you use fire, needles, swords etc. not to. Also, lots of malls and stuff insist on it.
Fact of life, I'm afraid. Good reaction under pressure...

May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

I would hate to have to get insurance for performing magic....I guess, some situations may call for it?

Performing without insurance is like driving a car without insurance - a dangerous thing to do.
Consider what happens if, while you are doing Crazy Man's Handcuffs, a rubber band breaks and hits someone in the eye. Trust me, you will be owned by that person's insurance company and that person, for life. Or, you do Ring Flight and the ring goes flying off into the wild blue yonder, never to be seen again. Can you imagine what could happen? Regarding Ring Flight, a few years ago (okay, I admit it, a lot of years ago!), a magician working the legendary New York Loungs in Chicago, did that effect for a couple. When he produced the ring on the key ring, the couple swore up and down that the ring was NOT the one that they had given him and called the COPS! After lots of talk, hassle and more, the cops finally got the information on the couple and hauled them in on an outstanding fraud warrant. They were a couple of con artists! But the magician almost lost his job, the bar almost got closed and it was NOT a fun night for most anyone! So clue up, folks! Get insured. Accidents happen and so do bad people. Just a quick note. IBM & Sam insurance will not cover a lost ring. They call it a mysterious loss. If the ring is damaged or a stone falls out, they will cover its value after the deductible.

I have Public Liability Insurance, but the number of insurance companies I had to phone to find it was ridiculous. I found out a lot of insurance companies did not do public liability for entertainers, so I spent whole day finding it., I was just wondering what insurance companies provide this because I found only a limited number of companies do it?
