Hiya Gang!
Without further ado... It's that time of year! Who will win The Tarbell for 2015?! What is your favourite book that was released in 2015? Please submit up to 3 entries and we'll tally them up on Feb.01. 1. 2. 3. _______________________________________________________________ And, gang, I know firsthand how much of an impact this thread will have on someone's life. Seriously. The prestige from this little thread will drive their sales through the roof. So please let's take this seriously, say nothing but nice things, and have fun! We're going to change someone's life! RULES: _____________ If you follwed the Trick Of The Year thread last year, things got a little bit complicated. What started out as a fun thread between pals several years ago has turned into a HUGE event and, you know what? That's a good thing! It shows that the art of magic is alive and well and that we're all passionate about it!! I think next year we might end up going to some sort of panel judging but, for this last year, we'll keep it to the old voting system one final time and see how we do. That said, to help reduce drama (we can never eliminate it, I'm afraid) let's try and keep to the following... Vote with Book Title and the Writer Name. Please submit 3 Entries(if you're able). If you have been selected and want to encourage your pals to take part... You must have 50+ posts on the Magic Café for your vote to count. If you're new, that gives you over 2 months to join in the community and share in our passion. It is impossible to police or enforce a "no asking your clients, friends, etc to vote" rule and, personally, I think it's silly to ask people not to share their excitement. How can you have a contest if you're not allowed to talk about it?! On that note, I ask that you please... Don't offer financial incentives. Encourage people to vote for 3, if possible (I know it's harder to find 3 books in a single year than an effect) not just one. Limit the number of your announcements to 3 times. I trust people (perhaps that's a fault, lol) but I also trust the voting public to choose what they truly feel is the best and not just what soemone tells them to do. Lastly, this is a thread for JOY. Let me be clear- HAPPINESS! Any post that is not a vote or is something positive, I will ask for it to be deleted. There are other places on the Café (Right or Worng) for political disussions. But they won't be here. Sweet Marie- wish me luck (I mean for moderating this thread), lol... _____________________________________ PREVIOUS WINNERS of The Tarbell ______________________________________ 2000: no voting took place 2001: no voting took place 2002: no voting took place 2003: no voting took place 2004: no voting took place 2005: Dear Mr Fantasy, John Bannon 2006: Power Plays, Mike Power 2007: Session/547, Joshua Jay 2008: Approaching Magic, David Regal 2009: Magic: 1400s to 1950s, Mike Cavenry 2010: One Degree, John Guastaferro 2011: Researching 2012: Luca Volpe, Emotional Mentalism 2013: The Approach, by Jamie D. IIRC, in past years, some kind soul has posted a list of all the magic books that were released that year. It would be great if we could have another such list to refer to for this year.
Also, what is the rule on re-releases and ebooks. Are they eligible?

Thanks, Marshall! That's awesome of you to post those!
Re-releases is a great question. Hmmmm. I think they should count, right? I mean, if something is re-released; there is generally a good reason (added content, new thoughts, etc). Maybe just use your personal judgment, though, and think how great it would be for a new book to win the award. I'm always open to other thoughts, though!

What about 'Tenyoism' by Richard Kaufman? It will be out about a week or two before the end of the year.
Probably best to save it for 2016? |

Everything I Own Has A Handle Or Wheels, by Dick Oslund, the Road Scholar.
I've been waiting for a couple of years for this tome to be released and it is excellent. It's a big book of Dick's life as a magician (70 plus years) and has a large section in the back of many (like 50!) of his tricks and routines. This is a fun read! Dick knew so many legends of magic! He really starts from the beginning telling about when he was a boy seeing magicians who performed on "the circuit," moving on to performing in sideshows, the school circuit he worked in, etc... And he just gradually progresses through his life in magic sharing his memories with you. I love this book- it's really amazing- I'm jealous of the magical life Dick has lived and am so glad to have a signed copy. Here's a link: https://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/dick-o......ar-book/

What about Destination Zero by John Bannon? Impromptu by Martin Gardner/Todd Karr?
|
|||||||||
M Petersen Regular user 117 Posts |
Destination Zero should be on that list. That was my fault. We pulled it from the website as it was close to OOP and we were unable to get more copies. Impromptu should be on there as well. That is only available from three dealers, so we did not carry that one. I will go back and edit the list.
Destination Zero, by the way, would easily be in my top three. |

Neither of my two favorites were on Marshall's list.
#1 Magica Analytica II- Very original easy to learn effects, not all card magic using very diabolical math concepts. Many totally impromptu. Clock of Alexander, Too tired To Deal, and Topsy Turvy Cards I am currently performing #2 Destination Zero- All Bannon fans will enjoy a variety of self working and easy impromptu effects. David |
