A very nice XIXth/early XXth century Witch Staff/Cane just enters our collections. The rod, the snake and the dog are attributes of God Asklepios, son of Apollo, who could ressucitate the dead. The cane is a protection against illness, wounds and sudden death; and has the usual functions of a walking stick. |

Beautiful piece Curator!
Asklepios/Asclepius is the Greek representation/interpretation of the much earlier and older Kemetic/Ta-Merian (ancient Egyptian) Neter (Divine Principle/Force) known as Wadjet, symbolizing pre/proto-dynastic Lower Kemet. Wadjet is the earliest known representation of a serpent entwined around a staff, symbolized by a papyrus reed in Kemet. And can be seen flanking the doorways and entrances, expertly chiseled into the stone of temples and ancient hospitals/healing centers found all throughout the Hapi (Nile) Valley region. The Rod of Asklepios is not to be confused with the Caduceus which Kushetic/Nubian elders in Aswan informed me is a symbol of peace and protection, attributed to the Kemetic Neter (divine force) Tehuti (erroneously called "Thoth"). Reportedly, Tehuti witnessed two serpents entwined in mortal combat, and separating them with his staff he brought about peace between them. As a result the wand with two encircled serpents came to be seen as a sign of peace and stability. There are others who have later interpreted the Caduceus to symbolize the crucified "Jesus" hanging between the two thieves on the hill of Golgotha (aka Mount Calvary). This is a Christian Mysticism understanding anyways. According to Hermeticism, the Kemetic Aten symbol (Winged Solar Disk) atop the staff (human body) represents Man and Woman's Higher Consciousness (the Pineal Gland/Crown Chakra) where complete Freedom and "Godhood" can be attained (at the top of the Tree of Life). The two Snakes represent the Left and Right Hemispheres of the Brain. Tarot symbolism includes these symbols as well... There are an unlimited number of ideas one could come up with for the use of this staff in an effect. Do you have a routine for this piece, Curator?

I don't have a routine, but as a bonesetter/healer'staff, it's a wonderful popular art item from the late nineteenth /early twentieth century.
