What do you think of this? Do you think the kids would like this kind of escape and novelty?
"Directly from the repertoire of seasoned performer and comedy magician Louie Foxx comes an this visually hilarious and unconventional escape! Are you looking for a new comedy escape for family shows? The Straight Suit is Louie Foxx's hilarious take on the straitjacket escape that will get BIG reactions! EFFECT: You are strapped into the Straight Suit, which is like a straitjacket except that it's a full body restraint. While you struggle to escape the suit suddenly inflates and fills up with air! This is where the fun comes in, while you wiggle to escape you cause the suit to gyrate in all sorts of crazy ways before you finally escape! You'll be amazed at how quickly people whip out their cellphones and start taking pictures!"

The concept looks like it could be developed into a very funny routine if you have a flair for physical comedy.
Certain types of tricks and routines lend themselves to different types of audiences. To me this is not a kidshow trick, but most suited to outdoor festivals and holiday parks. I could see Gary Dunn storming it with this. You'd have to be careful that the first part of the inflating doesn't look too suggestive. |

I think a conventional straight jacket escape has zero appeal for kids. This escape, as an escape, is very unconvincing and is weak escape material even for adults. The suit itself is funny, for children, because of the different ways it inflates. I almost think you could simply incorporate the suit into a kids' routine while eliminating the escape element altogether, or I think that would be my approach, if I could think up the right routine.

It could probably be pretty entertaining like the climb inside balloon stunt, but I'm not so sure the escape angle would work or seems convincing, especcially with younger kids. Maybe if you could find some other excuse to wear it such as you need to wear it for a levitation or whatever. It would be good to see a full unedited demo.

When I developed this I was trying to come up with a "comedy escape" that wasn't an IN and OUT type of escape. The Straight Suit obviously isn't supposed to be a legit escape, it's a comedy piece. However I'm frequently amazed with how many people after the show ask how long it took me to learn to get out of it!
For me the escape angle was the "hook" to getting in the suit. If you just climb in and start doing wacky stuff it's funny, but it's missing some sort of presentational angle. The escape angle is how I decided to fit it into my show. It also solved the problem of getting into it. Unlike the balloon where getting into the balloon is interesting, getting into the suit really isn't without some other motive. Also by using the escape angle it makes it a surprise when it starts inflating, unlike a simply getting into a suit and turning on a fan. This was originally created for outdoor shows. Last summer I had a place for it in my library shows. I was a bit nervous about doing it for a more "kid show" audience than a "family show" audience at the beginning of last years SRP season. Much to my surprise and it went over very well with that audience indoors. It's currently the closer to my school assembly show and does well for me. Now is this for everyone? NOPE. If you aren't a physical performer, it will probably look very strange in your show. If you do very "magical" magic it probably won't fit in your show. I can't imagine Merlin putting this on. If you don't have any comedy in your show, it will probably be out of place in your show. So in my very biased opinion which is based on actually using it in hundreds of shows the answer to the original questions is: YES kids like it Louie F PS I'm not on the Café often, so don't be surprised if I don't respond to any questions/comments in a timely manner. |

Louie, I love it. It doesn't have to be super strong magic to be entertaining and in the right hands that would be a winner. In the wrong hands, a dud. I have a feeling I might be the right hands!

As far as escaping a real jacket for kids. I've doing this hundreds of times at schools, for inspirational shows or reward programs and I've escaped when in a park and couldn't carry a lot of equipment.
It always goes over, as long as the kids a re 5 and up your good. It's even better when they are 6 and up because they start to become logical around that age. On the other hand, If you escape from a pair of handcuffs and children put their hands through the cuffs easily, they don't usually grasp that your hand is larger. They think that because they can slide their hand in and out that you can too. So escapes for kids work as long as you don't let then try things on. ' Here's another guy that's done a thousand school shows for lower and upper graders Mario Manzini. His entire program is escapes, 45 minutes of escapes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erikson%27......elopment The Competence stage generally signifies that children are becoming logical. Erikson's book is taught in developmental psychology 101 (make this a sticky for reference) Not everything needs to be funny for kids to enjoy it. I left me entire case of kids magic at the shop and arrived with a briefcase of close-up by accident... so the show was close-up (for 6 and 7 year olds) I got a tip. yes yes yes, I prefer to use boxes, silks, rings, rope and music for kids shows but I didn't have it..... they liked the close-up. It's not the trick, (repeat along with me and dick) It's not the trick, it's how you relate to the audience. Yet I would do the Suit Jacket Escape on a repeat show on a stage. I think you need the audience to see head to toe to make it really work.

I had great success with Doug Scheer's "Houdini's Squirt Gun Escape"
The routine is available here: http://www.dougscheer.com/store/p3/The_3D_Lecture_DVD.html When I saw the add for Loui's Straight Suit, I thought it would earn plenty of laughs. It looks like an entertaining piece. Cheers, John |

While I also consistently get excellent reactions from both children and adults with a standard straitjacket, this routine looks like it would go over very well with kids. Lots of opportunity for humor here, and a clever solution for a comedy escape without resorting to "in and out"
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.
