I am trying to find what people think of this deck but I can't find anything on here. If someone could find a topic of SUM Deck on here or give me your thoughts, that would be great. Thank you...

Skitch,

Which effects, exactly, do you perform?
It's just that everyday you post a new appeal for information on a different proprietary effect.

Either:
a) You are a multimillionaire spending more on effects in a month than I do in a year.
or
b) You are performing to the same three people daily and need to refresh your act at an alarming rate.

In either case, for the sake of your bank balance, may I respectfully suggest that you stop chasing the latest "new thing", buy some good books (I'm happy to recommend some) and work on developing both your own effects and an act rather than a stream of "tricks"?

I don't do Magic shows or gigs because I can't. I don't have the time being in a wheelchair 24/7 and on dialysis four soon to be 5 times a week.. The reason why I don't buy books is because I have books.

I have arthritis in my wrists which doesn't allow me to do sleight of hand effects or false shuffles and so on. So, that is why I am always looking for new effects and you are right where I am doing it for the same people. That would be my family, nurse and some others.

I have books that taught me things but wasn't able to do the tricks. So, with the money my Grandfather gives me I would rather buy an effect that I know from asking that I will be able to do instead of spending the money on a book and not being able to do any of the effects.

I don't chase the latest new effect, if you noticed, the SUM deck has been out for a while. I do Magic as a hobby for fun, I just want to make people happy and make them forget about their problems for that one trick.

I just thought of something else. I come here for help, and to make friends. Everytime I ask for help everyone here is always very helpful. I want to thank you all for helping me when I asked for help.

Have you considered learning palm reading and such?
It could be truly magicial.

Yeah, but what effects could be done with that? Besides, I don't believe in palm reading.

David Regal has sections in his books which teach you how to make and use gimmicked decks to do the most unbelievable things.

Another suggestion is to buy about four Svengali decks (each with a different special card) Learn or create several very different effects with the Svengali principle and use the different decks to mix up the focus from day to day.

I guess I could just say, "You should do what every magician should do. Look at what you have and see how you can create new effects with the principles you already have.

Cheers,

Tom

Skitch,

I don't do a single "move" or slight in my whole professional act, I don't have arthritis, I'm just rubbish at it!
Also, I try to develop my own effects, I actualy envy the amount of time you have. If I had that much time to devote to mentalisim I'd be publishing a book of effects a month.

All I'm suggesting is that rather than just buy effects off the shelf, buy some knowledge and develop your own. There will be no physical limits to any effect you have thought up yourself nor will you be reliant on others opinions.

I haven't bought an "effect" for over a year, but I buy knowledge, tools & props for making new effects weekly. You can always pay someone to say, trim short a card for you if that what YOUR effect requires.

I'd strongly recommend that you have a look into the area of suggestion, the only tools you need are your mind and the ability to talk.
Also, once you have mastered using suggestion, you can perform a never ending stream of effects all with the same technique.
Some recommended reading/listening:

Wonder Words - Kenton Knepper
Miracles of Suggestion - Kenton again
7 Deceptions - Luke Jermay
Building Blocks - Luke Jermay

Seriously, learn to do this one thing well and you'll have hours and hours of effects limited only by your imagination.

Good luck,

Doug

Hi Skitch,

I think Doug is right.

If you can’t use sleight of hand, use sleight of mind then.

Besides, you are going to star getting stronger reactions. You will be surprised yourself.

Well, give me some examples of effects you do from these books? Pretend I am a SPEC and just go over some effects of what you do. Not how you did it, but you present to the SPEC

Ok......

* How about you get your nurse to take your pulse - it stops. You then get her to take another spectators pulse - that then stops.

* You have someone hand their ring to another spectator. It first get very heavy, then starts to pulse, then becomes so hot they can't hold it.

* Making the second hand on a watch seem to freeze

* Making the lines on a leaf twist and change into another shape without you touching it.

* Making an apple someone is eating tase like a strawberry

* The list is endless...

Skitch, you need to stop think about effects and start thinking about principles and methods. Once you know enough of those you can do anything you want.

Skitch,
If I may: Some very successful mentalists, who BTW post here regularly, have health conditions such as arthritis, mobility challenges, etc... I see that they make no secrets about the fact (on their websites), and I feel it just add to the feeling of awe that mentalism inspires.
Personally, I regularly suffer from anxiety attacks, sometimes at the most inconvenient moments. By studying and practicing suggestions and the works that Mr. Segal mentions above, I think I come across more convincingly, because people see something out of the ordinary in my physical characteristics anyway. A bit like the shy, friendless kid whose pituitary gland just became overactive one day, and gave him in compensation all these incredible insights and powers, but only at times.
