Here is a scientific paper (written by five theoretical physicists) explaining the science behind Lubor Fiedler's classic Dental Dam Penetration.
It hurts my head trying to understand all this. I am not even gonna bother. But for you kids who are actually smart - you may enjoy it. http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1509/1509.06232.pdf All the best, Joe Mckay |

I can't even get past the title; "The ‘coin-through-the-rubber’ trick: an elastically stabilized invagination"
'Invagination' is the infolding of one part within another part of a structure,[1] a folding that creates a pocket. Guess I'm not as smart as I thought. Lest you think you're smarter, this quote is from page 4 of 20; Modeling the invagination A wide variety of continuum models exist to describe rubber elasticity, where the strain energy density depends on invariants of the left Cauchy-Green stretch tensor [13]. One example is the general hyperelastic model proposed by Rivlin, where, for incompressible materials, the energy density has the form [14] 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 1 2 3 1 2 1 3 2 3 , 0 ( 3) ( 3) , p q R pq p q W C Sorry, the mathematical formula won't translate. |
