Cold, but we haven't had any snow, although they're forecasting it for tomorrow.
When I was on the street, I would try to work the fringes of street fairs and downtown sidewalk sales. Since people were strolling to and from their cars, all I had to do to get a crowd was to make a few balloon animals and hand them out. Of course, they were only week ends, but that would suit me fine as fill in when I didn't have another booking for the day. |

Your set is completely irrelevant, whether or not you need work on drawing a crowd, keeping a crowd, making them stay or making them pay. I good entertainer could do all of the above well with your set or anyone else's. What would you say some of the necessary elements are to drawing a crowd? What have you learned so far about drawing a crowd?

So far I've learned one of the biggest things is to be HEARD or SEEN.
Heard could be anything from being miked and calling attention or loud banging or simply a routine to music. Seen could be maybe you have a noticeable outfit or maybe you're standing on something so you're elevated. It's interesting how much you learn in such short amount of time just by doing |

Anytime someone writes a post like... "what do you think of my set" makes me think...
This guy has no idea .... what he's doing.... at all..... or he wouldn't be asking that question. I'm glad you didn't go back to that and moved toward what you're learned. good for you.

Yeah it's been interesting and I appreciate all the help and insight.
I'll be able to update this thread when I'm home in March for a couple weeks. I'll be able to go out then again |

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been so MIA recently. With wedding planning and working back for cruise lines there hasn't been enough time for me at home to go out busking.
However, I have been transitioning from close up to parlor magic and hopefully one day make it on a big stage. Some of the effects on the streets I still use for a stage/parlor show. It was an easy adaptation in the aspect that our busking shows need to be seen from a decent distance away. I've also unfortunately have teetered away from card effects that need the signature or card remembered. Cards across however is still strong as always. Don't hate me but I've moved from a cups and all routine to a larger chop cup routine. The environment I'm in doesn't allow the cups and balls to be seen properly since I'm elevated a lot of the time without a camera. The chop cup I use is don Alan cup with 1 1/8inch white balls. The final loads are oranges high are great. I'll be home in June for a month or so and I'll be able to get back out there with nice and hot weather.! Be in touch soon and all the best everyone |

I went out today since it was going to be a slightly mild 85 today! Had my first run in with the cops.
He was super nice about it. He saw my sign and at this point I was only doing card tricks for a dude. I asked the cop if he wanted to see a magic trick. He said "I love magic but I just came to make sure that was all you were doing and that he had to answer other calls". He told us that the shell game and three card monte in my area (Norfolk, VA) was still very prominent. I explained to him that the only thing I do that could resemble gambling is my cup and ball routine (the chop cup, a la dennis loomis). He said don't worry and keep doing what you're doing. Nice guy! He probably figured since I was in one of the only nice parts of Norfolk (Ghent) as well haha. |

Good point Robert! As long as you're not forcing the noise out of them
Actually I've been our a few times experimenting with "The Thing". I absolutely love it. It's intriguing, magical, and without a word conveys what you are there to do! I've had much success with it and from the beginning of this thread my working regime has gone to the effects I love performing the most. The thing Ring and rope Chop cup Torn and restored transpo. I don't do circle shows, only trickle shows so the audience is close that I gh to see everything. Also, the audience should be able to follow you by your patter if they can't see something for a second. I'll be back out for a few more days this summer them I rejoin the ships until February |

Just wondering but do you do a stage show on the ships
|

SleightlyChris Veteran user Lancashire, England 360 Posts |
Yeah you could say that since I am a bit elevated. And I don't do it for the guests. I'm a crew member and I do shows for the crew.
My job on the ships is an actor but I get to do magic for crew when I have time . |
