When I had cable installed, being a movie loving family, I opted for the premium package. This includes all the HBO, Showtime, Cineamax ect. We also have "On Demand" which grants you excess to TV shows and movies you may have missed the first time around. And as an added bonus, since we are members of Amazon Prime, we receive FREE video streaming of all of our favorite TV shows and movies. Now with all these channels and options I felt we had the TV world covered. If it is on or has ever been on TV I should be able to watch it.
Last month, after reading all the café member's positive reviews, we decided to start watching the series "Fargo". I went to the "On Demand" menu and there it was, the entire 2nd season, available for free, at my fingertips. However, right underneath that was the entire 1st season, ... available for purchase at .99 cents per episode. what??? I can watch the last season for free but the season before that (we used to call them "Reruns") I have to pay for? Well I still have my back-up Amazon's video streaming. I opened their library and found the same thing!! 2nd season available, 1st available for purchase, but they wanted $2.99 per episode. Now flash forward a couple of weeks. It's Christmas time and we were in the mood for some holiday entertainment. In the "On Demand" movie list was a section labeled "Christmas Classics". Great, just what we were looking for. I entered that section and they were right, they had all the classics IE "It's a wonderful life", "Miracle on 34th street", "White Christmas" all available...for purchase...What?? You want me to pay to watch a 6o year old movie because this is the time of year when I want to see it? And half of the movies were scheduled to be on later in the week for free but if I wanted to watch it NOW it was gonna cost me. That is ridiculous!! And last but not least. Ever wonder how many BAD movies there are. Just look at the premium channel's movie list. There are thousands of movies available but 90% are movies you never heard of or never wanted to see in the first place. I will now return you to your regularly scheduled program. |

Get Hulu. $7.95 a month and it has the full First season of Fargo for free plus all the seinfeld episodes. When I was single, I dropped cable completely and just went with Hulu and Netflixs and I never missed having cable. ( In New York, you can still get the main broadcast networks for free, the old fashion way: with an antenna.) so between the Antenna, Hulu for the cable shows I watch and Netflix for everything else, never had a need for cable. Total monthly bill was $15.
Now that I'm married, I have Fios. My wife needed cable. |

Premium channels are a huge rip-off. Most of the movies they play are crap. The occasional good series they offer are just not worth the price of admission. Am seriously thinking of dumping premium channels, staying with Netflix and perhaps going with HULU or one of the others.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

See, you should have been complaining when pay cable started interrupting their shows with commercials. Since that didn't phase you, they assumed you were ripe to keep paying for what once was free.

What's cable?
If you need fear to enforce your beliefs, then your beliefs are worthless.

Bob1dog,
If you are into foreign films at all, Hulu streams all the Criterion Edition films, which is the reason I originally got it. They just added all the Jacque Tati films, a favorite of mine. |

For great foreign TV series (from Germany, Norway, France, Italy, Sweden, Holland, etc.) check the Mhz schedule:
http://www.mhznetworks.org/ Their TV dramas are really good. Usually about one and a half hours in length, and filmed more like a movie. Incidentally, the Mhz world news coverage is interesting too ... many times discussing topics in ways we don't get to see over here. |

When HBO started back in the seventies it was all commercial-free. Now cable channels are just as bad as regular programming with about twenty minutes of ads in an hour presentation. You're correct, everyone just let it happen. Myself included. Then all of a sudden we were barraged with commercials. But it's still not too late to dump on cable premium and if enough folks follow through, it's all about the money.

I've found some great foreign films on Netflix and I've also discovered some of the delightful British TV series that are far superior than much of our US run-of-the-mill garbage programming. But I wouldn't call myself a fan of foreign films because subtitles can be tedious, I have found some very good ones.
