Run Monster Run - Same as Run Rabbit Run, but uses Sesame Street Character Cookie Monster. Great looking colorful prop, and kids love it.
Cookie Monster lives next door to a bakery and he keeps sneaking into the bakery at night to steal the cookies. Stealing is wrong, so I ask the kids to help me break him of this bad habit. They go crazy over this. Hank Lee stopped making these over 40 years ago due to a copyright infringement, which makes it even more special since so few magician's use it any more. |

Hi Dick ...... While I agree with what you said, I still find some routines more fun for me to perform, hence, my favorites.

Hi Dick,
I agree with everything you said about showmanship, and I love Quentin's handkerchief routine. The one commonality behind every effect I do is my showmanship, so I base my favorites on the ones that are the most fun to perform and that get the best response from the kids. Besides, I was just answering Ollie's question since he was the one that posted this thread. Run Monster Run is simple, visual, and hard hitting - and those were the 3 criteria Ollie cited. He didn't include the criteria of only recommending effects that one can purchase today. In fact he never stated why he wanted this info, which lead me to believe that he was just taking a fun poll. Hi gms... I "missed the point" of the OP not caring about availability. Thanks for straightening that out. Ha! I did another Charlie Miller! (using a preposition to end a sentence 'WITH'.
I generally like everything that I do, but, I must admit that a few are special favorites. So! I apologize to both you and my friend, Jakeg!

I get great reactions with Cakes and Adders by Gary Dunn.
I use the snake can ending and the kids love it. For those of you not familiar with the effect. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S17668 |

Well people, it happened again.
I checked Olie's posts in the last 30 days and .....,, NOTHING We took the time to lay out expert advice with no consideration to personal advancement and we all spun our wheels, but good. FROM NOW ON if someone is new we need to ask them pertinent questions and get the OP involved. We're not here to write books (Dick is the exception) I believe that everyone here tried to offer their best advice (even if a lot of it is idiocentric ( look it up) but still, the intention is there. Agreed?... Agreed Make sure these people are engaged or all this gibberish just becomes an EGO flinging contest to see what sticks to the wall !

The Café is a great place for advice, and information, and from people who have taken the time to put in the hard work. People here are very generous with their knowledge. New people should be willing to jump in and participate and contribute, not just expect others to answer their questions. I have recieved more than I have given on the Café, but I try to offer what I do know, and help when I can. If someone is new and doesn't feel like they have a lot to contribute, they can at least express appreciation for the answers others offer to their questions. Some do that, some do not. So, Jay, I agree. Before we start throwing answers at a new person's questions, we should throw questions to get the new person involved. For example, in this thread the OP asked for others to offer "your favourite kids magic effects? What are ones that are simple, visual and hit hard?" But the OP offered no suggestions of their own. That was probably an indication that they were just looking for others to help them build their show. The person is possibly new to magic therefore looking for something simple. But they want a good show so they want something visual and hard hitting. Maybe that is not the case, but it sure is suspicious. |

It's sometimes obvious by the wording of the question itself that someone just wants to hear them self talk. (Not that the answer 's aren't interesting , but the questions are dumb.). Questions that often start with 'what's your favorite ' aren't often from people actually seeking information about unless they are specific. Easy to spot.

The silver lining is this: I myself (being still pretty new to magic even though I'm almost 35) have found discussions on the Café' where this very thing has happened. However, even though the OP split, I was able to learn a GREAT deal from said discussions.
Of course, I agree and feel that it would be better to get them engaged first. I just wanted to say that I have been able to learn from a lot of posts that where started by some d-bag OP like this one lol |

Please refrain from d-bag talk.
The OP was fairly new and impolite but may not have realized that an expression of appreciation was in order. I have posted in a thread and forgotten about it, only to find that others had been helping away with-out my checking in. It was rude but a simple oversight on my part. -Mary Mowder |

Any trick made to perform for children can be a favorite. It depends on the routine you put together for that certain trick.
Take (Stratospheres), most of my magic friends think that it's a boring trick, yet, it can be a funny and entertaining piece of equipment for children of any age, even a simple cut and restored rope trick can be made to be an amusing piece for kids. Presentation--presentation. Tricky Ricky |

Funny... still nothing from the OP.
Anyway... what's gotten the best reaction for me is any trick where you play like the kids caught you doing something sneaky.... think Hippity Hop Rabbits, Sucker Die Box, Jumping Scarf... anything that gets the kids yelling "it's on the other side!" or "you turned it around", etc. When I used to do kids shows, I had probably 2 or 3 effects that got the kids yelling, and they loved it! There's something about them banding together as a single voice to catch the magician doing something shady... until, of course, the rabbit ends up being purple or the die is completely gone. Never got old!... at least not for my shows...
Tada!...
