I picked this up (and paid for it) as I was interested in the Magic Number, which I saw on Matt's YouTube channel.

The e-book is well written, clear and easy to follow. All the effects are FASDIU and the basics can be learned in a few minutes with a deck of cards in hand, which shows the clarity of the explanations and the direct handling.
There are no pictures, which does not hamper the explanations, but as most sleights are not covered, this would not be recommended for a complete beginner. Having said that, there is nothing hard here.

Magic Number - Matt does an excellent job in providing a satisfying and 'logical' solution to this kind of effect - I will certainly being playing with this as it makes for a fun and engaging middle piece in a close up card set, which then in turn sets you up for many other effects.

Gone figured is a solid effect which feels like a more streamlined version of a Mark Elsdon re-working of a Jennings effect - a very good and simple effect which is less procedural than other of this type an should get very good reactions.

Cheap suit is a reasonable effect, but I think I prefer the bones of 'Not my Problem' on Matt's YouTube channel.

Pac-Maan is just not my type of effect. Its pick a card, mate at a number. I'm not saying its bad, but there are CAAN and coincidence effects (e.g. Gone Figured) which are more direct or stronger in my opinion.

Dr Daleys Discarded Sandwich is a reasonable effect, but not something I would use in preference to other existing effects.

Overall, a very good debut that gives good value and has a John Carey feel to it. Most effects are on Matt's YT channel for the curious. The writing style makes the effects a breeze to learn.
Good job.

Firstly, thanks for risking your hard earned cash on the work of a newbie! Secondly, thank you for taking the time to write a review.

I'm glad you liked the material, 'The Magic Number' seems to be the hit of the book at the moment! Shame you didn't like PAC-MAAN though, it's one of my favourites and seems to play well. I do urge you to give it a try. One thing to suggest is to use John Carey's 'Shuffled Ose' subtlety when you have the spectator mix the cards. That way, they remember shuffling the deck right before you reveal the position of the mate. Remember as well that, as far as they audience is concerned, you never know the identity of the prediction. That's what makes this strong.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to check out the book and write a review. Oh, and comparing it to the work of John Carey ... if that's not a compliment then I don't know what is!

Matt

PS: 'Not My Problem' will likely appear in 'volume 2' which I hope to have done by April. Best bet is to like/follow/subscribe to at least one of my social media pages to receive updates Smile

Sorry, don't do Social Media!
As for PacMaan, I tend to not do so much of this kind of effect anyway as I normally work strolling/mix n mingle.
Good luck with the projects.

Hi mate,

Which effect were you after a demo for? Three of the five effects have demos on my YouTube channel.

I've watched the performance of "The Magic Number", and a trick that almost immediately came to my mind was Gregory Wilson's "Lethal Fours" from his Pyrotechnic Pasteboards DVD. The handling differs slightly, but the ending is practically the same.

The trick is actually a version of David Williamson's "The Famous 3-Card Trick", based on Edward Victor's "Eleven Card Trick" / Tommy Tucker's "Six-card Repeat".

The videos are unlisted. I remember seeing these demos a while back and being impressed with the construction/thinking.

I'd like to see some more magic from Matt. Not sure if he's still active on here or even still involved in magic.
