Check out the Deck of the *** from tarotbyseven.com
You can get it custom made with or without names, and a choice of backs. These are printed on demand and maybe something that would appeal to you. I have a deck and can vouch for their high quality Woodfield |

Some of earliest decks preceding those mentioned so far had no names, such as the Vieville tarot. Others only didn't name Death.
I like the idea of unnamed and unnumbered cards which focuses on the potential for reading, aside from a kind of 'painting by numbers' approach using unrelated systems and concoctions of numerology. Fine for beginners and much loved by magicians and mentalists guides, but it's just not the symbolism in front of you. Both Rider-Waite(atrocious) and Harris-Crowley Thoth(beautiful) destroy the major symbolism and Tarot tradition and in place impose their own very idiosyncratic philosophies on to them. |

Dr. Todd is absolutely right. The Waite-Smith deck is in the public domain. That's one of the reasons you see its images used so often. That's also one of its strengths, I believe -- many people are at least somewhat familiar with its imagery. For its history and analysis of its enduring power, I highly recommend Secrets of the Waite-Smith Tarot, a wonderful book.

US Games position is they have the copyright until 2021.
70 years after Patricia Colman Smith's death. The art I've seen advertise using these images make the point that they have been altered. |

I like all the symbols. Just more stuff to trigger your thoughts. If you find them limiting, you're looking at them in a limiting way. Look at the words and symbols on the cards as if you didn't speak English and can't read roman numerals. You can treat everything as symbols, you just have to stop yourself thinking.

The first occult Tarot with scenic minors was the Etteilla (1783).
The Sola Busca was specifically for gaming (Tarok Tarocchi Tart etc). Current copyrights are for the name "Rider Waite" and the packaging (US Games Systems), however Stuart Kaplan (owner USG) will defend his rights rigorously. Deletion of the numbers and titles will have no affect on the normal sitter, who does not know the structure of the deck. Even with the numbers and tittles missing, one can STILL use them. You just don't say silly things like, "5 is the number of..." when there's no five showing. |

I just stick to readings with playing cards. The method I have learned is from this: Cartomancy - Fortune Telling With Playing Cards by Julian Moore. I find that a lot of people aren't open to Tarot cards, but they have no negative opinions about playing cards (unless you say, "Pick a card...").
