John Bannon has a flawless cardhandling and nice presentation. He also has some cool finesses on old methods. I have only seen him on video but that was a great experience.

Good call. If you read his books, you'll see that he wants all his tricks to be
"surprising" and not merely "challenging" to the spectator.

Harry Lorayne! This magician has been FRYING the world's top cardmen for decades. his ability to talk and think atthe same time is unbelievable. He does things without batting an eye-lid, and without arousing suspicion. If you can perform some of Harry's card magic with your own style and presentations, you will be a true miracle worker.

Jay Sankey is probably the most surprising just because of his personality. You can never predict what he is about to do or say. Also, I must say every effect/sleight I have seen Peter Duffie perform has totally fooled me.

I'd like to put Kostya Kimlat's name into the mix. He is an up and comer with great chops but even greater misdirection and presentation skills.

I'd like to add my friend, Lee Asher to this list. He is a creative, diabolical, and sick man.

Most surprising? David Roth. Did you know he is adept at cards, in addition to being "The 53rd Assistant?"

For just "out there" surprising, Paul Harris and Jay Sankey.
For "astounding" surprising, René Lavand. We're a bit late for one of the greatest card workers I've ever seen, but if we can mention folks posthumously, I will nominate the late Jack Birnman, the guy who wrote the introduction to Aaron Fisher's "The Sleight Album." He was a true cardman, and died as he lived, with a deck in his hand. |

Thanks Vic, I'll second David Roth. I took some lessons from him years ago and his card work is great.

I would nominate Paul Harris as surprising. You don't know what he will come up with next with a card or cards, coupled with his slow style, like Mike Skinner, my second choice.
