So you don't get to comment on being a cop until you have 10 years on the street? Then perhaps your opinion will be valid. Why does it never seem to work that way?

I've *always* said that cops have very difficult jobs, and *always* felt they should be well compensated for what they do. It would be ridiculous for me to comment on how tough the job is without having done it.
The comments I've made about the police force have to do with policy and structural decisions, not about individual cops. Never have I complained about a police officer's working conditions. (In NYC, full pension after 20 years used to be the case. It may still be.) Just about every job is much more difficult and involved than people who have never done it seem to think. Working people should be supported, not ignorantly attacked. If you think that teaching and controlling thirty 7-year olds for 7 hours everyday is easy--well, talk to the kids show performers who only have to worry about a 45 minute show. And they've got balloons.

Administrators and management play a very different role from workers; they are not on the front lines and they don't have to answer to the people. More typically they answer to corrupt politicians, wealthy players, and other administrators, while they hide in the back rooms trying to look good.

He has been teaching there for 16-17 years. Their average starting salary is between $28,000 and $35,000. And yes- the longer seniority teachers are making the big bucks. That's another issue he gets frustrated with- how teachers cannot be fired as a result of poor performance. He said there is a lot of dead weight teachers just trying to skate to retirement and not teaching the kids as they should. But yet cannot be fired because of union protection. This frustrates him as he cares deeply about the kids and says the kids are suffering while the teachers skate along. RNK

Hi RNK,
It is frustrating to see some teachers just going through the motions until retirement. There are, unfortunately, individuals in all occupations who try to take advantage of their situations and do as little as possible without any pride in their work. I applaud your friend for his consistent and long-term dedication to the eduction of his students. I'm sure his students appreciate his efforts. Regards, Steve

I do agree about individuals in all occupations taking advantage of their situations and doing as little as possible. In the private industry some get away with it but a lot of times it usually catches up with them and they usually get fired, whereas with unions this can not happen. He states that the principle and administration know who these unproductive teachers are but cannot fire them because of the unions. This is my friends big "gripe" with the system, bad workers/teachers are protected by the unions. He gets all fired up because they get paid the same based on how long they have been teaching at the school rather than the teachers performance. Though he does say without the unions who knows what salaries they would be making. So it's like a "Catch 22". RNK

Disputing specific examples of entitlements does not address the matters of bureaucracy and rule abuse that occur without public accountability.

Speaking of the US depleted and aging military equipment, it seems OK for the US to cut spending on our military but yet make a deal with Iran that gives them billions of dollars that supposed to stop any Iran nuclear weapon advancement. And what does Iran do today- conduct new ballistic missile tests outright defying UN Sanctions and go on to say, "Our main enemies, the Americans......", you can read the article here: http://news.yahoo.com/iran-conducts-fres......504.html
Just hard to find the logic that our government gives billions of dollars to a country that outright defies sanctions and calls America their enemy. Can someone help explain this logic?

Least the military-industrial complex gave us the internet, so they could spy on us and not before they had their massive cyber war teams out there working to stir up trouble among anyone that tries to do anything, but still if it wasn’t for the military-industrial we wouldn’t have the magic Café.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

The U.S. outpaces all other nations in military expenditures. World military spending totaled more than $1.7 trillion in 2013. The U.S. accounted for 37 percent of the total. So I doubt that cuts to the military - even if we were reduced to having military expenditures reduced to the size of the next eight largest military budgets - are going to hurt us. Secondly, the money that Iran is getting is NOT U.S. money - it's their own frozen assets that were unfrozen as part of the nuclear deal. And violating the terms of the deal carries severe consequences. Also, I'm sure lots of countries call America their enemy - so what?? And by the way, Iran was just 1 year away from having a nuke 5 years ago. Netanyahu (and those here on the right) told us so. And when that didn't happen, we were told again (emphatically and with the utmost conviction) that they would definitely have nukes in 2012 if we didn't take military action. And then in 2013. And as it turns out, all those claims were false. All that being said, we'll just have to see how this latest situation plays out. I agree, we should be concerned, but let's also keep things in perspective. Ron

Yes. It is almost like all those global disaster predictions that if we don't ACT NOW we are DOOOOOMMMMED.
Don't you hate when people use that tactic?

Thank goodness, the 2000 miles of The Wall will be paid for by Mexico, so we won't have to worry about the cost, waste, and fraud inherent in such a project.
