Lee's recent (2015) "First Farewell Lecture Tour" presentation was even better that the Seance presentation at MindVention, and his lecture notes were excellent.

Having seen both those lectures gave me a way of glimpsing into the mentalism world and how vivid and different it is from card magic, which was my entry into the magical world, because I wanted to do exciting stuff with my kids. From then on I watched more lectures and even could begin to read (and comprehend Annemann). With those lectures it just is so easy to learn (practising is still necessary though and mastering the material is in no way easy, maybe it is just the fact, that I am a visual learner.) And to be afraid that material will leak out...that is not gonna happen. Why? I answered a post here on the Café, regarding the Marc Paul Live lecture a few days ago, were the question was about a simple trick (2 tricks to be exact). Both are mathematical principles, which both are easy to comprehend. Doing the work in making it fluent is one of the parts needed to perform, but the more important part is the presentation. This is the most important thing (IMHO) one can learn from those lectures. Not the methods or ideas. But the presentation. Only with Annemann I wouldn't get that kind of exposure to mentalism. It just wouldn't be the same. And again: the tricks are not the main thing, that is something I have learned since I started out. I hope that wasn't too confusing. I am glad that this lecture will come out. I heard so much about Lee Earle from the 3 mentalists podcast, and I wasn't disappointed with the recommendation of the Marc Paul Lecture (déjà -vu...) and I hope that the Lee Earle lecture will be interesting as well. |

This is one of the 'big guys' and has been a big inspiration for me. It's a dream come true to see him at Penguin Live Lecture, he was on top of my wishlist. So thank you Penguin, but most of all thank you Lee. Entertaining, charming and funny, if mentalism was music he would be Michael Jackson, so please Lee show us your moves!

Unfortunately I'm not able to watch this live anymore (surprise bills suck) but it's the first thing on my to buy list come payday. That and several other penguin lectures.
On the plus side, I have a copy of M.I.N.D to keep me company through these dark and disappointing hours =D |

Any comments on the lecture from those who watched it live?
Unfortunately, we had a huge storm in Seattle on Sunday and our power went out about half an hour before the lecture started and just came back on a few minutes ago, so I have to wait until the download is ready. |

I could only see part of the lecture. Just the introduction and the theory presented for me was worth the price.
He had some mistakes during performances, he referred them as "senior issues". Taking that aside (not big thing really taking his reputation as a legend in Mentalism) it was a insightful lecture. Great methods and most important, a plethora of knowledge and lessons in delivering interesting premises. If someone is interested in tricks, you can find some cool ones, but the real substance is in the experience for the real performer. Best

In one of the effects, a participant misheard the instructions, so that was kind of an unlucky break. My favorite part of the lecture was the chat with Dan Harlan at the end. Lee was relaxed and open, and he's a storehouse of valuable knowledge. (I thought Dan did a particularly great job on this one, and he's become really fantastic at hosting these lectures.) I was struck with how warm and welcoming Lee is with his participants.

What kind of material did he cover? Was it seance stuff or standup mentalism? Was it mostly theory and his perspectives or effects? Can't someone talk about the content? Perhaps a review would be helpful to many here rather than just opinions.

The download is now available for those who purchased the lecture and did not see it live.
It runs 222 minutes (3.7 hours). It's hard to find 4 hours of free time to watch the video recording, I find it easier to block out the time to watch it live. I know that doesn't make logical sense, but any professional trainer will tell you that the percentage of people who will actually sit down and watch a video recording of a long presentation is much lower than the percentage of people who will sit through it live. I know this to be true because I own a couple Penguin lectures that I still have never found time to watch. |

No, just looking for a real review that is helpful. The Penguin website doesn't breakdown the components and tell how they went as a review would.

A postcard from Auschwitz? Really? Who the ***** wants to be reminded of that during what should be a light-hearted and entertaining performance? Is it now ok to milk negative emotions during performance and nobody sent me the memo? I had always understood that was a no-no in mentalism. Any time a reviewer says the lecture is "gold" -- that should be a tip-off. |

Just thought I'd drop in to see the comments.
Someone mentioned a 'senior moment'; actually, I've discovered that it was a comedy of errors that led to the stumbles. I'm diabetic and hadn't eaten since breakfast on the day of the taping - it's pretty frenetic at the studio - and thus developed a low blood sugar condition. For those who have not experienced those symptoms, imagine trying to perform while your brain is busy almost blacking out. No excuses ... it was my job to present a flawless lecture and I allowed my physical condition to affect the outcome. Can't help the guy who misheard the word for the errant bookmark routine. Still, even the backup failed. I spoke to him after the lecture and it turned out on word #2 he got 'cute' (as many magicians do when interacting with Mentalists). Still, it was my fault for keeping a piece in the lecture that wasn't 100%. Even at 70 I'm still picking up clues. Getting old is only preferable to the alternative. ;- ) To BCE, who are you - exactly? What experience do you have? How many lectures might you have presented? How much material have you written or scripted? Please list the books you've authored. Then we can evaluate your comment with a little perspective regarding your expertise in critique. You seem to be focused on ONE postcard out of 50 - one which was not selected or used, by the way - to pick at the lecture material. In fact, the presentation was about hooking into EMOTION and how to tie into it in a routine. Ya just can't wring much passion about mundane scenes such as sunsets, city views, or herds of cows. It takes something that connects deeply, which the Auschwitz postcard enabled. (Yes, people actually buy such postcards - I suppose as an "I was there" documentation.) It would be much the same as using the Hindenburg disaster or the Roman Colosseum (where thousands were killed) as subject matter: everyone FEELS something about that material. By the way, for those who didn't watch, other postcards depicted Fort McHenry, Independence Hall, the church where Patrick Henry spoke, "Give me liberty or give me death", the Martin Luther King statue in D.C., The Alamo, the first footprints on the Moon, Engine Company 10 in NYC, etc. All of these tug on the heartstrings if you pluck 'em right. Personally, I'm rather weary of VIRTUE SIGNALING individuals who inevitably find something un-PC to whine about on blogs and boards. Audiences have the final say and when the Auschwitz image is selected there isn't a dry eye in the house when we're through. And, yes, it's perfectly permissible to mine negative emotions - provided the outcome is positive. Of course, not having heard the script for Auschwitz, you couldn't possibly know that, could you? I'll be delighted to hang around and deal with a few questions if others have 'em. Fire away. |
