I have a question for every one.
What ten things are a must see in ones lifetime? Now this is not meant to include the given things. Seeing your kids grow up, your grand kids get spoiled, etc. I mean things that are a choice to see out in the world. The things that broaden the mind. Things that taking part in them can change you forever. Things that may be adventuress or daring. If you cannot come up with ten one is good enough because if ten people add one then that's ten right? How about this if a friend said I'm leaving for a month on an adventure but I don't know where to go what advise would you give them? _ |

Antarctica. A definite for me. Some day I will hike there. Same goes for Spitzbergen.
Everest is another, which I have seen (though not from the top). One of Shakespeare's great plays in the Globe Theatre (which I will do this summer). I would love to stand by the finish line watching the world record for the mile or 1500m being beaten. I would also love to attend a heavyweight title fight.

Climbing a "Fourteener" (mountain over 14,000 feet) in Colorado. Of the 52 of them in the state almost all are not technical climbs (meaning you don't need fancy gear or ropes). But views are spectacular.

Have any of you ever been personally and physically present to... ...watch a baby being born? ...watch a person die? ...congratulate a fellow human being on what he or she considers to be the greatest day of their life? ...comfort a fellow human being on what he or she considers to be the worst day of their life? Why is it that Everest and Eifel Towers get our attention for bucket lists, and feeling and experiencing other human beings does not? I'm not being corny and sentimental. I've traveled more than most, seen more than most, been there and done that. And when I go to bed at night, my "10 Things" include seeing the very things that the OP doesn't want me to list. That said, I'll name a few: 1. Being at the top of a high mountain with a good view. Colorado? Yes! But pick the one nearest to you. You don't need to go to the Himalayas. 2. Go to another country where you don't speak the language. Hey, if that's Mexico, go! If it's Canada, go! You don't need to go to the Himalayas. Just go. 3. Go to the birth place or death place of an ancestor. 4. Go to a rock concert of the hardest version of rock that you know of. Forget how old you are, and forget whether you like the music. Just go. 5. See the ocean. 6. Watch the sunrise. 7. Look at a naked woman or man with no sexual goals. Just look at them (if you can get one to let you gawk) and admire what nature (or God, or evolution, or whatever) has created. 8. Look at a deck of Tally-Ho playing cards, and think about who designed them and why they are so cool that none of the 1,032 kickstarter projects launched each day will never match them. 9. Go to the side of town where non-white, non-American, non-English speaking people live. Go to a convenience store or Café or barber shop or whatever and say, "Hi, I'm ***", and just chat with them and get to know them. (Seriously. If the point of this thread is to go to the Great Wall of China, why not go to Chinatown first? Better yet: go to where the Arabs or Iranians or Syrians or (fill in the blank) live. They won't bite. They will welcome you. Believe me. I've done this 1,000 times in several countries.) 10. Look in the mirror. Look again. Are you really seeing who you are? Really? Look again. Looking in the mirror--not with vanity, but with introspection and wonder and curiosity and criticism and love and appreciation and frustration--is the #1 thing to see in your lifetime. Have you done it? |

No you're not being corny or sentimental, Jeff. You said what I couldn't find the words for, and what kept me out of the conversation. Merci.

I was not there when my grandfather passed on from a fatal heart attack. This is my eternal sorrow. I wish I could have been there to say goodbye. With that experience in mind, I was so grateful to be holding my mother's hand when she passed on after a long fight with cancer. What I did not get to have for my grandfather, I did get with my mom. I watched my daughter being born. If you have never had that experience, you can't know how it feels. One of the most beautiful things I have ever known.

I went to another country on the ocean and attended a rock concert, got so high I was still up at sunrise, so check 4 more. I also went to the himalayas so bonus point. I also did a card trick for a guy in Poland with Tally ho cards- check a couple more. Looks like I gotta get more going on. |

One thing that is on my list is to try the hallucinogenic drug DMT. Once would be enough, but it will have to be done. It is meant to be a tremendously powerful experience.

Don't think about this a lot, but I would like to see...
- Grand Canyon - Mount Rushmore - New York City ("being there" rather than just the airport, which I've experienced...and love plane-watching) - Though I've seen them once, I would LOVE to go see the beautiful lakes of western Canada, again - La Scala theatre in Milan, Italy - My brother went to Japan and had his pic taken by a Godzilla statue, makes me want for the same (I include silly in this list) I've been around the world a lot and seen a lot of non-USA places because of my work, and find it a tad humorous that I haven't yet seen some of the main points of interest in my own country. Just the way it turned out.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Where did he or anyone suggest that feeling and experiencing human beings do not get our attention? I say they most certainly do, much more so than seeing physical things, but as these things are more personal, and are not traditionally shared on casual "bucket lists," we don't see them presented in that manner. I certainly don't think that's an indication of how important they are regarded. Its ok to have bucket lists of different categories. Its just that the one brought up by the OP is not the kind you bring up, and that's perfectly ok. That said, nothing wrong with "human feeling and experience" bucket lists, either.

Since we're getting into things involving human feelings (as opposed to the OP's original request for things that are adventurous), I would suggest a visit to Auswich or Dachau.

I only wanted to point out that the "given things" might very well be the things on my own list. As I said, I've lived a strange life in which I've traveled the world for reasons of necessity rather than tourism, and wanted to throw my two cents in about the "given things". No offense intended. |
