Seeing as I lost my silk cloth I will go over to envelopes. Can I confirm that the envelopes end up sealed? Thanks.

Hey sorry guys, but I need to make a correction to a previous post post I made about the envelopes used with the wallets.
I boutght some of the envelopes when I purchased the wallets from Penguin.
I also had a few of the sample envelopes that I had gotten from Propdog about 2 or 3 years ago.
I thought I'd use up the few samples I had first because I feared they were getting old and may have lost their stickiness. But they hadn't, they worked perfectly, which is good to know. I just finally started practicing today with the new envelopes. I assumed they were the same but unfortunately they are not.

First of all, they are made by John Morton and distributed by Alakazam so they're not true Bonsalopes.
Secondly, upon closer inspection out of the package, they have a differnt appearance. While my old envelopes looked exactly like a tiny envelope with a sealed flap, the new ones hve no flap and look kind of odd to me because they look unlike any envelope I have ever seen. So that was a little bit disappointing but I oculd live with that.
But thirdly and most important the new ones do not work well with the wallets, even though it clearly states on the instruction sheet that their sole purpose is intended to be used with the nesting wallets...WTF????

The difference is that the old envelopes sealed by having 2 sides that mate and each side was not sticky on it's own but when they came in contact with each other they would stick very tightly together. This is the age-old property of rubber cement.
But the new envelopes have a self-adhesive strip on only one side which has a white non-stick peel off covering that you remove during set-up. Following the instructions exactly (all 4 lines of them) you peel off the white strip and expose the sticky part underneath. This would be the same as putting a piece of double stick tape on one side.

So if you've followed me so far then you probably know what's coming next. When you place the flap of the smallest wallet inside the envelope it sticks to the leather flap itself. It would be impossibe to perform this (or even carry it in a pocket) without causing the flap of the wallet to stick to the envelope. This of course makes it impossible to remove the leather flap of the smallest wallet before removing the envelope, at least with out messing up the envelope.

Now I'm not saying you cannot use these at all because I found that there is still enough stickiness left after getting the flap out that the envelope seems to still stick together okay.
But it does make it much harder to remove the last wallet flap and then after you do you then have to secretly stick the envelope flap back inside again, just too much unnecessary trouble when the old envelopes worked beautifully.

I don't want to try it with too many envelopes because I am going to send these right back to Penguin along with a note.
The original Bonsalopes worked perfectly but I cannot recommend these new envelopes from Alakazam.
I noticed that Propdog seems to carry both types now, but the original ones may only come in black and I much prefer the red ones.
I also liked the idea of the envelopes having windows in them that would work perfectly in the routine I was planning.

So I may resort to having to make some of these myself, which is feasible because I'm not a table hopper and a small batch would last me a while.
Or I'll just use the supplied red cloth with no envelope which is good too.
Anyway, if you get some envelopes just make sure they are the original Bonsalopes.

Thank you so much for sharing information on these envelopes, I was just about to order them from penguin. And you saved me a lot of grief and aggravation it's not all about the money. I hope somebody from penguin or prop dog reads your review and make some necessary changes .

Glad to save you some grief Baldini.

Now here's the funny part I'm almost too embarrassed to mention.
I ordered the envelopes mentioned above a few days ago, they are the solid ones without the clear plastic windows in them.
Then last night I got this idea using the envelopes with the windows in them so this morning I put a set of those in my cart when I was ordering something else from Penguin, in large part to qualify for free shipping.
A couple hours later I get a shipping notice from Penguin and the packing your order video. Then a couple hours after that I break out the envelopes I had ordered previously only to find out that I'm not happy with them at all.

So now I've got another set of envelopes on the way and will just have to return those along with the first set.
I should have checked them first.
Oh well, live and learn. If that's the worst thing that happens to me all day I'll still consider it to be a good day!

I can't really understand why anyone would not want to use the cloth - it's classy (especially when using a spectator's ring), logical (unlike an envelope), impossible looking, instant reset, and no refills.

The new cloth is a great improvement on the old one - much thicker, less slippery, and generally easier to handle. Starching and going over the folded cloth with an iron every now and again will keep it in good condition.

I think many people use the envelope because it's "even better". I know that's why I tried them. The reset just was not worth the hassle. Also of course the cloth allows the performer to "perform" the final reveal.
Although it is cool that the spectator can tear open the envelope I don think this plays as well for a group of people as the cloth does.

Not sure I agree that the envelopes look illogical. When it comes down to it the wallets themselves are pretty illogical.
But I certainly agree that the presentation with the cloth is better for a larger group.

I find this new cloth to be difficult to set up, I think because of the bulk and because it's not slippery. Also been having a problem with the ring sliding into proper position, again due to the grippiness of the cloth. But I'm sure it will behave nicely once it's fully broken in.

I like the envelopes as well and think they both are great in conjunction with the wallets.
BTW, in playing with the envelopes yesterday I discovered a very simple technique that makes them much easier to reset than the cloth, at least for me. Nick in the video sets the cloth really fast. I can't set my cloth nearly that fast yet.

I don't have the new set, people are saying the reset is tougher. I don't think the reset with envelopes is too bad, just more consumable stuff to carry around with you.

The new cloth, for me is too thick and does not fit, and only after I trimmed it, it still is a hassle to get it loaded and set up. Then the removal is not smooth and easy as it should be. I tried washing and drying, then starching it and I tried talcum powder, still not as good as the thinner original.

Although I never had the original I'm having the same problem Baldini, although I haven't taken the plunge and trimmed it yet. Also, I find it unraveling quite a bit so it may shrink enough on it's own. Smile

Perhaps some of the cloths provided were slightly larger or a different material than some others.

I have a red cloth that is for cleaning glasses and camera lenses. It's pretty small and thin and somewhat silky.
I have hopes it will solve the the problems I've been having. I just need to find it first.

Mine just showed up today. I may have a solution to the cloth. I used my fingers and actually stretched the wallets and the cloth went right in. I'm loving this effect already.

Good magc to all,

I wouldn't say that the envelope is illogical, but how many things does something need to be inside?

*** Since some people seem to not have a funny bone let me preface this by saying this is not meant to be taken seriously. ***

Do you wonder what happened to your ring? Oh, and what do we have here? A wallet. I wonder what's inside?

---My ring?

No, another wallet.

---Oh, okay.

And you know what's inside THAT wallet?

---Are we ever going to get to my ring?

That's RIGHT - it's ANOTHER wallet.

---Oh, okay. So I guess third times the charm never caught on with you folks, huh?

But wait, we're not done yet. Do you know what's inside THIS wallet?

---If it's not my ring, I won't be responsible for what happens.

No, not ANOTHER wallet - do you think I would really do that to you?

---Oh, okay, so it's my ring?

NO - it's an ENVELOPE!!! Isn't that amazing?

---Beats performer senseless.

There is one other thing Id like to add. If you take the large wallet and actually lock the flap in place then try to open it it is a little hard to do anyway. I noticed if you were to open the wallet flap by the top of the flap and not the tail it is easier. So I set up the wallet and opened each one by the top (the part folded over) and it worked very well. Also think about this even if it appears you struggle to get each wallet opened and out it will only enhance the effect because how in the world can you get a ring into several wallets that you can hardly open. Anyway hope this helps.

Good magic to all,

Eric

Gosh I feel a little like Columbo but just one more thing. If you slightly bend in the sides of the wallet as your fingers enter the wallet it makes grabbing the tongue of the wallet a lot easier.

Good magic to all,

Eric

Had the original. Love the trick but wasn't happy with the prop quality. So awesome I finally get to upgrade the wallet set. Just wish they'd give an upgrade discount.

Mine is in its way. Meanwhile, I was wondering if spectator can unfold the cloth. I know they cannot extract the wallets, but that final bit in their hands.... Cannot wait!

The performer will need to partially unfold the cloth, but the spectator can then take over the unfolding for the final reveal.
