I enjoy this effect because I enjoy the mental challenge. Often times I just do it for myself to keep my mind sharp. Also, it's nice to have an effect where you're actually doing what you claim to be doing! It's handy for when I run into that highly skeptical participant who tries to catch you out on everything I do.
And if you're looking for a presentation that veers away from that "look what I can do that you can't" approach, check out "Any Date at Any Day", a presentation idea from Patrick Redford, found in Colin McLeod and Ken Dyne's excellent book, Gregorian Mind. In this case, it's the spectator that discovers a hidden ability in themselves. |

It may just be me but the "I have a super brain, you don't" thing just puts me and those I have worked for off. That's why Mr. Cassidy's sudo demonstration and explanation of card memory is the kind of thing I'm attracted to. But for those who want to exercise their brains all I can say is, you probably won't get Alzheimer's? Or so I'm told that mental gymnastics can stay.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.
If I'm not responding to you? It's because you're a TROLL! |

True, but again, there are many ways to present this that is not "I have a super brain...". So many effects, mathematical or not could be presented that way, yet we find ways to avoid that in most effects, and you can do that here too!

Good discussion but would someone who has tried various methods care to suggest the easiet one to learn. Some of us seniors don't remember as well as we once did. it's up to each individual to decide how to present it, so presentational ideas are extraneous to me. I am more interested in how quickly I can do it and how long it will likely take me to learn it. Average math skills I guess.
