I'm not searching for a method or anything but am concerned about the floor. I thought about dropping it on a pillow but It doesn't seem to soften the impact and makes the bounce unpredictable and can easily bounce away from me... Any thoughts or ideas to soften the force of impact? I thought about using a basketball but I feel that it just doesn't have a huge impact as the bowling ball does.
Am I worrying too much??? I'would hate to damage someone's floor or stage. J Rodriguez

That's why I don't do it, I don't have that much chance to perform it in places where I wouldn't damage a floor. plus I don't want to carry a bowling ball around. You could bring one of those rubber floor mats like they use at weightlifting gyms.

In college I had a summer job doing maintenance work. One job I did was to repair a damaged stage floor in an ampitheatre. It was a wooden floor without a subfloor. A bowling ball would have at least cracked that floor if not completely broken it, depending on where it landed. I cringe everytime I watch a bowling ball crash onto a stage floor. Most floors are built to withstand the impact these days, but many will at least get a small impact dent. It is a nice illusion, but not for the locations I perform. Homes, fairs, churches, community centers etc... I would never perform it in any of those, too risky. Maybe I'm just too parinoid. But I prefer not to take the risk.
Considering this post is in the Little Darlings section, I'm guessing the locations you would be performing at would bring a similar risk. I certainly would never consider doing it in someone's home. Even a concrete floor in someones basement could be cracked. |

Or you can roll it off stage and have a sound effect of 10 pins

I put a board on the floor .. protects the floor and the ball while adding to the noise factor. Never fails. I use Bowl-a-Rama as part of my opener in almost every show.

Dan, aren't you concerned about the ball rolling toward the audience after it drops? I usually have the front row 3 or 4 feet away so I can't take that chance. But I did learn Andrew Maynes ball from bag method and it's easy, and I heard about a new gizmo available to do it to make it more convincing. David Kaplan does some great stuff with bowling balls.

That happens frequently ... but never an issue. It never rolls with any velocity to harm anyone. In fact, I find it adds validity. My only concern is that no one picks it up and clunks someone else with it but that is basic audience management.

I saw a tap dancer doing his dance on a sheet of plywood. The plywood had a bow/warp in it, and it was placed convex (curved)side up. That air gap between the board and floor gives even more noise effect. This act had a cloth on the floor at the front of the board and a hand-held microphone placed on that to amplify the sound.
This breakdancing group is called Beat The Streets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8qLFV6QdtM go to 23 secs into the video to see Sean doing his dancing in the background on the board. Also at 4min 15 he does a couple of steps. If you use an amplifier, have you considered a few seconds of suitable music then stopped short just before the ball drops down onto the floor?
The presentation makes the magic.

I use Andrew Mayne's Freefall method to produce a bowling ball and have a metal folding chair just for the ball to land on. I've never had it bounce off... works great... very dented... but works great.

I just picked up the new bowling ball production from WMS. I think its going to be a good opener to music with a couple other "visual" effects

Here is Thoth, a street performer using a sounding plate to produce more noise, in this case a solid drain cover or something
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjnd__isN0Y Go to 19 mins 27 secs in the video and also at 20 mins 37 sec
The presentation makes the magic.

Is free fall the same effect as the one taught in his shock dvd? I just ordered bowled over and can't wait to get my hands on it. Here's the link and make sure you click on the video tab and check out the clip.

This post reminds me of my younger years when I thought I needed to produce a shot putt in my close up act.
Perhaps it was reading about Malini and his brick or ice. I finally dropped it (pun intended) after a sleight error of judgement on my part. Harris still 2 old to know it all

I really like Jamie's suggestion of using a metal folding chair.
People suggesting pads and other things to soften the impact are missing the whole point behind dropping the ball. The loud sound of the impact emphasizes the weight and authenticity of the ball, making the production value all the more impressive. A metal chair will make the thump and crash sound even louder, and protect the floor at the same time. Problem solved! |
