Yes (no sarcasm there).

Because privacy is a real thing. Not to be violated for the many because of the few.

Tom

The point is that your rights should not be violated Tom. Unless you're ready to give over your passwords to random hackers. That is effectively what will happen if back doors are built into communication devices.

Iphone users take their phone to the Apple Store all the time and have it reset.

Surely they can reopen a dead mans phone without opening everybody's phone.

So you would be ok with someone making child porn with your daughter and then sharing it with all of the other pervs on their protected computers? What a great dad to have. Or, someone video tapes the murder of your wife and there is no evidence tying it to the perpetrator, would you support them walking free due to their "right" to have their computer locked? Again, who on earth would want you for a husband!

Some of you have no balance on these issues.

Remember when the FBI showed a picture on national TV of the Boston Bombers and asked everyone for help identifying them. In reality, one of the bombers had already been interviewed several times by these same FBI and he was on a "Watch List" ..... I'm 100% certain that if you are on an FBI Watch list they have several dozen pictures of you if not hundreds..... So the FBI already knew who the guy was. The TV request was just to support the military action they took as a semi Marshal Law experiment.
This could be a similar smoke screen.

Tom, great point--that's why I urge you to read this if you want to pursue this further:

http://fusion.net/story/271636/apples-battle-with-the-fbi/

Apple already gave the FBI the iCloud back-ups of the phone; the FBI could have forced the phone to do a back-up again for the last 6 weeks' info, but they deliberately re-set the phone so that now the only way to get the last 6 weeks info is by creating an entirely new piece of software to hack into the phone. Once that software is created, it will inevitable be circulated and used by others for their own reasons. Such a demand puts everyone's phone at risk to be hacked.

Lunatic what sort of world do you live in?

So because of a hypothetical scenario you completely make up the rest of the country should have their rights violated?

Why not turn in YOUR gun because some others are doing mass shootings? Certainly you know what a right is no?

Also Tom there is precedent for rights such attorney client privilege surviving death.

Just how many rights are you fellows willing to give away based on fear?

Worse yet how many of MY rights will you surrender based on hypothetical nonsense you make up in your head?

Lunatic certainly you see that doing things based on ticking time bomb scenarios that don't exist and then calling others names based on that hypothetical scenario is not right don't you? You are an intelligent person. You can not have rights based on convenience. Being free is hard work. Tough choices. Wet can not just change rights because we feel it is the right thing to do.

It's a scam..... They knew they were going to die ... They obviously removed anything vital. The government wants the ability to hack into anyones phone. Smile Smile Smile

Many people are actually doing what I mentioned as we speak, so what's your answer in regards to child porn?

No ticking time bomb in either of my last 2 scenarios. The question I have is do we allow people to share child porn unfettered? Is there an actual middle ground to be had be either side? I think there has to be a common ground that both sides can with with each other to get the job done.

I do agree that we do have rights, but criminals do not have the right to privacy when a search warrant has been issued.

Lunatik, I have to wonder what kind of father you would be who would let his daughter's iPhone be hacked, let her credit card and bank card numbers be stolen, let her personal emails be read by a terrorist child molester, who then follows her and blows up the JetBlue airliner she is traveling on, using your daughter's stolen identity. Not to mention then sending out a tweet, all in your daughter's name of exactly how Sam the Bellhop is done.

When you see terrorists going to The 6,7,8 Club at 429 Queenthree Street, or whatever it is, clearly the terrorists have won.

Is that what you are advocating by backdooring her phone?

Bill Gates is on the news today backing the FBI and saying, "This is a specific case where the government is asking for
access to information. They are not asking for some general thing, they are asking for a particular case."

Can you answer my question that I asked earlier? Should sexual predators be allowed to trade child porn unfettered on their iPhones?

As computer power increases so does the amount they have on you increase. That which raises one man above another is essentially knowledge. They are the secret service. Now what does that tell you about who is above and who is below? I wonder if the bankers have anything to do with the secret service. Nah.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

My view is simple. There are hierarchies of rights. The right to privacy is there, but so is the right to security. Both are not equal rights. If I am threatening the security of a society, their right to security trumps my right to privacy. Hence we carry out surveillance of potential terrorists.

Be honest with yourself. What is on your phone? Unless you are a paedophile or a terrorist, probably nothing much. So what do you lose? The Government is not proposing to monitor our phones. The FBI are asking to monitor specific phones (because it will not just be one). Is that any different from obtaining a search warrant for a premises? They don't search every premises, just the ones they suspect are used by the bad guys.

I don't like the way the FBI have gone about this, but on the general point I am on their side.

By the way, does anyone really believe they did not retrieve the information before resetting the password to force this into an issue?
