Hi All,
I've been pulling out the coin stuff again and have a couple of different slot boxes. David Roth has a couple of good routines with them. I'm just wondering if someone else has some good ideas or routines with them. Thanks. |

I use a slot box (Buddah style) and a dragon Okito box to perform a kind of matrix effect where the coins start in the slot box and one by one end up in the okito box. I use a story line to make sense of it that goes like, "there are two boxes of differing magic on the table. The Buddah magic, which is good and strong, and dragon magic which is dark and greedy... you get the idea. I'm not much for stories, but I needed to give this effect some purpose, and a reason for the coins to go from here to there.
The rest of my slot box stuff reads pretty much like David's ECMME. |

I like the Buddah boxes by Chazpro...I have them all (except the newest one)...switching is a breeze...the "drop" turnover is easy, because of the bulging sides.

I agree. Once I got used to the difference in the shape from the standard Johnson boxes, I found the Buddah boxes were better for performing certain moves.
I've been thinking about getting the Beyond Okito gimmick box set, but I saw a poorly made demo video which completely gave away the gaff. Another victim of the "too good to be true" philosophy (and poor handling of the boxes by the maker of the video.. shhhh!) So now I need to let that image fade before I can buy the set. I looked around for slotbox routines, specifically, and didn't find too much. But, since you can use the slotbox like an ordinary Okito box, I would suggest routining something that utilizes Okito effects, and perhaps climaxes with an effect only possible with the slot box. This will ensure that, if your spectators have seen a striaght Okito routine before, they will not have seen the effect you use to end your routine, which will set you apart. |

My routine with a slot box, "Fist of Okito," is up on the online-visions magic site.

I went to the on-line visions website, but I'll be dipped if I can find anything on it. Anything besides the affiliate links to the the trickery site that is.
I'd love to take a look at your slot box routine Darren. Do you a specific URL that you could post that would lead me right to it? |

Wildstone,
When you get to the Visions home page, at the very bottom is "In Your Hands", that will take you to The Fist of Okito. Tom |

Thanks Tom. I'm going to head over there now and check it out.
That is a slick little routine right there. I like the fact that opening and closing the box is reduced to a minimum, I totally agree with the philosophy on that one. Also, I like the under proving characteristic of some of the transpo effects. Very nice, very beleivable routine that makes sense. |

Am I missing something here. I looked up "Fist of Okito".
An Expanded Shell will not fit in my slot box!!! |

What kind of slot box / expanded shell do you have? I have a regular and a Buddah style box, and Johnson shells, and they all fit just fine in either box. The shells are roughly the same diameter as an English penny, so there shouldn't be any problems.
I'm really interested here. What are your brands? |

Thanks for the kind remarks, guys. You hit it right, Wildstone, I've attempted to reduce all of the opening and closing, dumping, counting, putting back in, etc. Another feature of the routine that I like is that it plays up at chest height, not on the table like many box and coin routines.
My box is a Zachary box, which will hold an expanded shell. Another option is to use an unexpanded shell. It seems like many magicians have completely ruled out unexpanded shells, but they're more useful than you may think. A problem with the Beyond Okito box IMHO, is that it is unexaminable. The slot box, though gaffed, is examinable. I just have the box and coins examined separately, and stress the solid bottom of the box. |

I have a set of the Buddha boxes and both my Lassen and Johnson Kennedy enpanded shells won't fit (English penny fits fine). The expanded shells do fit in my Roth boxes though, but I know that was something he designed them for.
On the Beyond Okito box, my biggest problem is the handling of the box, if you know the gaff, you probably know what I mean. It's gonna take a lot of practice to use it smoothly. One thing I do like is you can do very visual penetrations. I came up with a little table turnover where push the lid on, press down on the box, and the coins visually penetrate as you lift it up. Then you immediately place the box down and lift the lid, no turnover. If you like coin boxes, I would recommend picking it up. I'm sticking with a regular and slot box for now, but the Beyond Okito box sure is interesting. |

Tomg:
Yes, unfortunately as I mentioned earlier, I viewed a pretty bad demo video that was on-line, which completely exposed the gaff. I do know what you mean about the handling issues. Mine should be in today or tomorrow, so I'll let you know if I have any epiphanies or revelations pertaining to the issue of the handling problems. I must be lucky with my shells and boxes fitting together. I have a Chazpro Buddah slot box, Dragon Okito box, Standard Johnson Okito, and a Roth Boston box set, and the Johnson shells fit it all of them as I recall. Quote:

I just have the box and coins examined separately, and stress the solid bottom of the box. I pondered over that quite a bit before buying the set. However, as you indicated in your routine explanation, somethings don't need to be over proven. Everyone has seen the coin boxes before, even if only as handled by a youngster. The box is always shown to be exactly what it appears to be. I performed a few straight up Okito routines at the bar a while back, and afterwards collected feedback from the spectators. In almost every instance, they believe the coins to be suspect, not the box. and in every case, I went out of my way to let them examine the coins, but only briefly displayed the box to them before moving into the routine. The "clang" of the coins going into the box seems to sell it as being solid, so I'm going forward on your premise... You don't need to say that there's only two coins on the table when there is obviously two coins on the table... and you don't have to defend the box's solidity if it is never in question. I hope I know what I'm talking about... we'll soon see You guys inspired me to write up my Okito / Slot box routine, and post it on my site. Thanks for the brain food. The routine is called Mikito Matrix, and you can find it at: http://www.dmimfg.com/freetrick.htm Cheers! |

Thank you Mike!
I now have a new routine to practice! Made that site a favorite, as well! Gratefully, Doug |

My pleasure Dougini. I'm just glad I have something to contribute every now and then.
I was reminded by a friend yesterday that not all Slot boxes can hold 5 coins. Again... I'm a lucky guy and my box does, but a lot of them don't, or they do, but the fifth coin sticks out a bit from the top. I'll rewrite an alternate method for the first load and post it today. I rewrote the first sequence and reposted it. Looking over the original and the edited versions, I think the new version is actually stronger and smoother than the original. Even though my slot box accomodates 5 coins, I do believe that I will switch the handling from now on. I did this routine last night for two seperate groups, right at the bar, standing. So it's good to go while on your feet as well. Also, during the first phase when I dump out the coins from the slot box (and let the classic palmed coin fall in with them), I dumped them right into one of the spectator's open hands. This really sold the whole "only four coins" illusion. So there's another small variation to think about. Quote:

It's not exactly what I expected, the gaff is exactly what I expected, but some of the dynamics of the box are a little quirky, you know what I mean. However, I think it has tremendous potential. It was an easy matter to adust the way in which I hold the box to a style more suited to the BO box, and it does well with all the standard and modified moves I've throw at it so far. I guess the best advice I could give at this early stage is to really sell the box as being solid and ungaffed, by actions not by words. I threw out a quicky routine at my girlfriend last night... she loves me and puts up with being a sounding board for all my hairbrained ideas, poor girl... She really liked it, and even after years of seeing box material, she was dumbfounded by a couple of the effects that I did. That's always a good sign. A magician's woman is either the best reality check, or the worst... I'm lucky in that respect. Mike |

Paul, As Roth's Live in London was mentioned which I have, but haven't seen in a bit may have Out With Five for the slot. It doesn't say, but I have the old VHS of this and his Expert Coin Magic Made Easy Vol 11- Okito Box Magic by A-1 and Out with Five is taught on there as well. Twocan from the Café` has a great handling of this on youtube. Just type coin box magic. Good luck, Christian |
