Thanks much, MagiCol!
Re, that last anecdote, some magician wrote in a "letters to the editor" type of letter to one of the mags., complaining about the show! He was upset because there were four novelty type acts on, before a "real" magician (the young Oriental lad with the very fine manipulation routine.) I wish that guy had been backstage to see the "fun"! Roy Snyder was so "impressed" that he booked me for the SAM convention in New York in '78, to lecture.

Anybody interested, try & find a 1963 British film called - wait for it - "The Punch and Judy Man", starring Tony Hancock (British TV sitcom pioneer) as a seaside Punch worker. May be tough to find in the US except on VHS, or look for a UK copy if you have an all-region DVD player.

Here's a video from, I'd say, the 1940's, of children's reactions to a Punch and Judy Show

The presentation makes the magic.

Www.irish-folk-songs.com has the chords & words to the song.
I wonder why P&J never caught on in the U.S. It seems to be popular in many countries throu out Europe and I believe South America as well. |

WOW!
Thanks, TWO MILLION! to MagiCol, and Steven Conner for those absolutely delightful ENGLISH P&J shows, and singing! I mentioned the late HAROLD STERLING'S school assembly show (magic & Punch) which I saw in the early '40s, and, of course the late CHARLIE ROARK, whose Punch I saw in Ringling Bros. in '46, in my book. I don't remember if I mentioned BOB MASON'S Punch in the book. The late JAY MARSHALL, and I, worked many club dates together in the Chicago area with magic, balloons, and Punch, in the '70s, but, I had never seen an ENGLISH "Seaside" Punch! Seeing the clown work with Mr. Punch, reminded me of meeting Brent DeWitt, who was clowning with the late WAYNE FRANZEN'S CIRCUS, about 25 years ago. I was spending a relaxing summer in Colon, Michigan, with my RV parked in Jerry Conklin's back yard. I had dropped in to Abbott's to visit with Greg Bordner, and, Greg told me that his Lions Club had just booked a fill in date for Franzen's show. He had a "hod" of window cards to post, and the show date was 8 days away. I had worked a season with Wayne, and, I "owed" him a favor, so, I volunteered to post the paper. On show day, I met the first truck as it hit town, to guide Wayne's son to the lot. (Wayne didn't have a 24 hour man.) Being "generally useful" I helped lay out the lot. Brent was in the ring five times! (padding out the show). We visited in his trailer, and I learned he also did Punch. He talked about working an "English Village" in Arizona, where the ancient LONDON BRIDGE had been rebuilt. (I can't recall the village name!) He had stopped to visit the village, and, was able to book his Punch show for several weeks. I did mention the late FRED "MANIPO" Harris in the book. Fred did a bit of magic, and, Punch. I never saw him work. I mentioned in my book about driving a hundred miles to catch him on the Beatty/Cole show, but, it was a matinee only date, and, when I got there, the sideshow top was half way down, and Manipo had left the lot. Jake! I wonder, too, why Punch has never really caught on in the U.S.

I spent a year in Barbados which is a British island. That was well before it became a tourist destination. Thinking back, I never saw Punch & Judy performed there either. I follow the few Facebook sites and watch it on YouTube. When you see the great reaction and how the kids sit in a state of awe watching and responding, you realize what a terrific form of entertainment it is.

Are films of the Jay Marshall or Al Flosso Punch shows available anywhere?
(I could search youtube but thought I'd ask here first.) |

Okay, I just remembered -
Go to britishpathe.com and type Punch in the search box. Quite a few newsreels (remember when every movie show included newsreels? Well, British Pathe kept the British Isles supplied with that kind of material for years and years, and now thousands of hours of it are most all free to watch) of P&J. (Still looking for Jasper/Flosso shows.) |

Hi guys.
A couple of weeks ago, you started talking about a guy who walked around Great Britain, with his puppets. In the 1970's in G.B., there was a 'sort-of' tv film about the man. I've been living,..'without a net', the past couple of months, so I couldn't respond(!). uhhhh, I swore, "the first thing I'll post,..!" Walter Wilkinson https://flic.kr/p/Gkq3AW he's one of my big hero. He wrote eight books(!). The first: 'The Peep Show', explains the whole get-up and philosophy. In two year spans, following, he would write a sequel. The Peep-Show – Geoffrey Bles, London (1927) Vagabonds and Puppets – Geoffrey Bles, London (1930) Puppets in Yorkshire – Geoffrey Bles, London (1931) A Sussex Peep-Show – Geoffrey Bles, London (1933) Puppets into Scotland – Geoffrey Bles, London (1935) Puppets Through Lancashire – Geoffrey Bles, London (1936) Puppets Through America – Geoffrey Bles, London (1938) Puppets in Wales – Geoffrey Bles, London (1948) His seventh book, you read it right(!)! "Puppets through America" He was invited to the first International Puppet Convention, in Albequerque, N.M. Sö, being Walter Wilkinson, he hopped a streamer, from London to N.y.c. ,...then, walked the rest(!). Walter Wilkinson. A really great guy. His books, an inspiration. |

That's why I used "IIRC" (If I Remember Correctly")! My ancient mind wasn't functioning 100% that day! O
