So sorry to hear this David.
Sending good thoughts. She is off the pain meds from the hip surgery right? All medications should be checked by your Dr. for a possible problem. Connecting with old stories and Music she loved when she was young can help. Do a google search for hits around the time she was in her teens and twenties. You can download the music. You are a good Son. Hang in there and stay strong. -Mary Mowder |

Has she had any problems with urinary tract infections, David? They can cause sudden cognitive problems. That's happened with my 91 year old Dad a few times. Seems to fly under the radar at an alarming rate. Very best wishes to you and your Mom & family.

David, I know exactly what you are going through. I too have a mom who is 85 and is going through dementia and a wife who had a brain tumor several years ago and has been completely bedridden for three years. Both require constant care. My wife is somewhat worse off with both physical problems and cognitive problems. She requires caregivers to stay with her when I have to work.
David, the biggest problem I face is the feeling of being alone and knowing the people you love aren't going to get better. I truly believe this life was never meant to be lived without the support and encouragement of others. We need each other. I'm here for you. David Williams |

David, you do not know me, but please listen.
After my mom had a surgery, she was moved to a rehab place to recover. By the time she arrived at rehab, they thought she had either gone crazy, had Alzheimer's or dementia or God knows what. Finally, after a few months, they at the rehab place suggested we check her in to a psychiatric unit. Those people at the psych unit - cleared up a urinary tract infection - CHANGED HER MEDICATIONS FROM THE HOSPITAL which had been seriously screwing with her mind. After just one week in the psych unit, SHE WAS FINE. Don't give up on your mom. Often, non-psych docs don't know what they are doing. Please try taking her to a good psych unit so they can make sure her issues are not caused by - improper medication (or, meds that are no longer needed!) and - unresolved infection Best to you!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Hi David,
If in truth she does have dementia, Mary's right, play plenty of her favorite music. Also, make sure she gets physical activity. If she can't get up for a walk have someone come in and have her do some exercises. Like mentioned above there could be some simple reasons for he mental change. I'm not really sure about how they diagnose dementia, but I'm not sure about x-rays. |

David, I don't know where you live, but most states have a department of aging. Your situation is not the unique, and is one that is seen often. Contact your state and see what assistance they can give you.
I have several friends with basically similar problems. In my state, NJ, , there are adult day care centers, I believe charged for on a needs basis, that pick up, and drop off people. My friend's father went to one, and she said that he seemed to really enjoy it there. Religious groups also have good resources and you do not have to belong to that religion to avail yourself of their resources. There are also support groups all over the place who can suggest a lot more options since the group members are going through it as well. You really have to br proactive and seek the council of other caregivers. I'm close enough to your mother's age that I've seen a number of friends in both your and your mom's situation. |
