I was reading somewhere that Mario Cuomo--once a professional minor league baseball player--said that the essence of baseball was the sacrifice bunt, giving up your own stats for the welfare of the team.
I was thinking about this and, not being much of a sports buff, was wondering if any other major league sport has a similar dynamic within it?

Not exactly "major league, but racing teams for foot, bicycle and car have some members sacrificing themselves for a specific member.
For example, when Roger Bannister attempted to break the 4 minute mile barrier he had tam members set the pace and fall off -- also to "break the wind" more important in cycling. In some sports such as hokey or basketball a member might "take out another player" -- getting a foul or game ejection, but unethically depriving the other team of player. but, yes -- the baseball function requires both sacrifice and ethics and may be unique.

What happened to my earlier post?
I listed cycling and Formula 1 racing (one driver slows to let his teammate win) as two such sports.

It was sacrificed for the greater good of the thread?

FWIW, the sacrifice doesn't hurt your stats - It doesn't count as an at-bat, so it doesn't lower your batting average or your on-base percentage.

Thanks for the clarification, Lobo. I wonder if that was always the case re the recording of the stats.

I would say that other sports have occasional analogous situations, but they're far less common. The San Diego Chargers, if I recall correctly, got bounced out of the playoffs in a game where they led and the other team was going for it late on fourth down. The quarterback threw a pass that, if it were incomplete, would have given the Chargers possession with little enough time that they could have run out the clock. Rather than knock the pass down, the Chargers' defensive back intercepted the ball and lost a fumble on the interception return, giving the ball back to the other team, who went on to score and win the game.
On most situations in football, it's better to knock a pass down incomplete on 4th down, thereby taking over at the line of scrimmage, rather than intercept the pass, which almost always results in taking over the bar in worse - sometimes much worse - field position, i.e. where the interceptor gets tackled. Most defensive backs. however, will take the interception if possible.

Cuomo is clearly a commie. It's all about self interest. Those who put the team ahead of themselves are losers. Self-gain always trumps group achievement.

Especially when coupled with the fact that it's been discovered that in fact in the overwhelming majority of cases, the sacrifice is a negative equity play, and the team would have been better off had the batter just tried to get a hit...

Hockey. Literally talking a HUGE hit and sacrificing your very body so another can make a goal. These roll players are unsung heros as there isn't even a statistic that reflects it at all. Well maybe the plus minus.

All summed up by Robert De Niro in The Fan. Probably the most disturbing sports movie ever.
