The concept of the "novelty store" dime and penny (made by Adams?) is different from the locking dime and penny. In the former, the penny is transformed into a dime with the help of a "magic block." In the latter (locking version), both a dime and penny are presented and the dime disappears leaving only the penny.
Neither one can be examined until the conclusion of the effect. Both can be examined afterwards. However, the locking version leaves you clean. With the novelty store version, you have to make a ditch. Also, it seems contrived that you need to place a little red plastic block over the top of the coins. That just screams "GIMMICK!"
