I recently bought a large lot of magic items, and these nameless / instructionless tricks were among them.
Any idea what they're called or who made them? I'd love some additional information before deciding whether to add them to my collection or send them to live elsewhere. (And pay extra attention to the last photo. That's actually something I've had for over a year that still has me stumped.) http://www.magicgaragesale.blogspot.com/ |

By the way, I think it would be great if someone could create a website called "What Is This Trick" because I'm constantly coming across things that I can't identify.
Maybe it could somehow be incentivized? Every time someone correctly identifies the item for you they get a prize, or a discount on something. For now though, all I can offer is my thanks and undoubtedly good karma for helping a fellow magician. |

Hi cbmar,
There are quite a few nice props there. Here is what I know (which isn't much): No. 4 is an earlier version of Viking's ESP Chip-Sational: http://www.martinsmagic.com/allmagic/men......trickery No. 5 is listed on Martinka's site, but no maker: http://www.martinka.com/martinka/auction......ID=11853 No. 6 is a version of the classic Tele-Vision Box. There have been many made over the years. You can see a few on Andy Martin's site: http://www.martinsmagic.com/allmagic/men......de-palma It's an awesome prop. If you haven't discovered the method yet, drop me a PM and I'll let you know. No. 10 looks to be Viking's Fatal Attraction-English Card Box: https://www.vikingmagic.com/product/fata......card-box No. 11 appears to be a "Jam Jar" and works like the title indicates. Your description is in fact the secret. No clue about the maker. The wood props all appear to be good quality, German perhaps? Personally, I would hold on to them, but I'm a sucker for natural wood props.

Wow! Thanks so much Wizard of Oz! I can't believe how many you were able to identify. That is some impressive magic knowledge! (And with links!) I really appreciate it.

Thank you, but I know little in comparison to other collectors on this site. Hopefully, Joe Long may happen upon this post as he is a long-time collector, buyer, and seller of vintage props. You could try PM'ing him. His user name is JL608.
You could also try sending your link to Kenna Thompson at KTMagic. His auctions are wonderful, and he's a friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable collector: http://www.ktmagic.com

No. 3 is a copy of Clarence Miller's "Hard Seven"... http://www.martinsmagic.com/allmagic/men......-miller/
No. 11 is also referred to as a "Marble Vase"... a recent version.... http://www.bigguysmagic.com/marble-vase/ As Wizard points out the method is as suggested. No.19... I wonder it it was the "method" for a rising card effect? An interesting collection! John |

Interesting. For the Marble Vase / Jam Jar... would there be another piece that holds it in place? (I've even checked for magnets. There's nothing.)

Typically no other piece. Relies on "friction".

#18--Appears to be a David DeVal Spirit Lock (if so, than the ""bell jar" has nothing to do with the lock, itself)
There are two versions of this "Squire" Spirit Lock --that allow the padlock to open without tools or keys. Are there any mechanical moving parts on the "stand" (bell jar)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Re: #18...
No, the stand doesn't appear to have any moving parts. The lock itself also wont "lock". The hasp opens and closes easily. |

There's also a single, much longer (maybe four or 5 inches) key. All three keys open the lock. Beyond that though, I'm not sure what to try. The three keys lock and unlock the Spirit Lock. What next? |

Re: Squire Padlock:
With the 3 keys...NOW its starting to sound like a "Key-R-Rect" effect......And because of the padlock being British....most likely its a Supreme Magic or Davenport Magic item. I'll check my catalogs, and let you know if I find anything. ---Moxahalla/Joe |

No. 21 Is Bob Solari's "Ultra Sensory Perception"... the prop allows you to know in which order the keys are removed. Might try reaching out to Bob Solari for more info... http://www.bobsolarimagic.com/shop/
No. 24 Looks like a version of Magiro's Water Wands... http://www.martinka.com/martinka/auction......ID=21785 No. 22 Is Paul Bernhardt's Illumin-Ace... http://www.martinsmagic.com/allmagic/men......rnhardt/ No.28 Looks like the original version of Chris Smith's "Dragster"... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1NFhAv_lCo No. 25 Looks like Pat Conway's Sym-pat-rise... http://magicbypost.co.uk/matchbox-magic/......ise.html John |

Not sure how much you paid for the lot, but it looks like a lot of good quality magic. Obscure...but good quality. And it looks like the collector took good care of his/her props...just wasn't good at organizing instructions!

I don't think item 1 from your original lot is Warner. To my knowledge he never used a faux gold leaf detail.
A couple of reference sites should you decide to seek out more: http://warner.qualitymagic.com http://www.alanwarnermagic.com

When I was unboxing everything, I came across one page of a notebook that had five printed trick instructions taped to each side of the paper. At the top of each page it said "Page 45" and "Page 46". My guess is that the original owner probably had everything beautifully cataloged, and that the person who sold me the lot didn't realize those dusty old notebooks on the shelf had any value and tossed them all. |

And since everyone is so good at this, I've added a few more photos to be identified. By the way, if you have any tricks in your collection that need to be identified, feel free to e-mail me photos of them. I'd be happy to post them to my site.
