Card Fountain motor
I am customizing a card fountain for a friend. He wants the cards to shoot very high. Most of the magic store varieties only shoot the cards a foot or so high. I have been trying out different sized motors with little success. To achieve the desired power and height effect the motor needs not only good RPMs but also torque. Does anyone have some knowledge in this area where they can make a recommendation on the size and type of the motor. Thanks in advance for any help, Steven |

Just a guess, but I think a good place to look is at a hobby/toy shop dealing with RC cars. Those electric motors have both torque and speed and if you find someone into RC cars they may have a lot of knowledge.
Is there anyway to get the cards to shot out with a slight spin...that would increase distance also. Like have the cards sitting at an angle or the motor wheel touching the cards at less then a 90 degree angle. |

Placing a magnet on each side of the motor will increase the rpm's and torque a bit, only for a brief burst for the card fountain, prolonged use will over heat. A nine volt battery should power a good hobby motor pretty well, if you wire another nine volt in series this will also help. You can also solder a capacitor across the leads of the motor to give it extra kick...

Great ideas, thank you everyone!
I'm eager to try the magnet idea. The hobby store is where I went first, the motors they gave me to try did not have the torque needed. (don’t you love research and development However, Radio Shack came through again. I found an 18,000 RPM motor with great torque that shoots them a good 3-4 feet into the air. It also seems that staggering the cards in the holder so they are positioned side by side (side to side Faro shuffle) gets them to fly out faster and higher. Thanks again for the helpful advice everyone! All the best, Steven |

I had wondered if positioning the wheel higher on the cards (so that it is in contact with each card the maximum time) would increase the inertia.

Possibly a gear motor might have more torque.

This would be neat to see a video of the super fountain once complete

I have owned a couple electronic card fountains, but none shoot any more then 4 feet. The advertise higher, but that is because they count the distance from the floor, and not the table top, hat, or box, I assume.
The only one that shot really high is the original thread method in a long box, like Doug Henning used on his shows. It was described in the Genii Magazine in the Magicana article by Charlie Miller, years ago. Even that famous one, that is no longer available, can't think of his name, I had his card fountain, and at a magic convention asked if I will get more height out of his new model with 2 batteries, he told me it would be the same. Kind of make sense, being the card is only in contact for less then 3.5 inches. |

Romero's Card Fountain is pretty good:
But the price is high: http://www.antonioromero.net/romeromagic......d_lang=4 €395 = $453.634. |

High RPM and torque are only half of the solution. The size of the drive wheel will also increase the speed and height.

Aside from the motor, you can get a speed controller to get the ideal height you are looking for.

Yes, Antonio Romero’s Card Fountain is brilliant, if I was purchasing one that is the one I would choose! I did find a good motor at Radio Shack, and it accomplishes just what my friend was hoping for. Shoots them nice and high and fast! Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help. My very best to you all, Steven |

You may want to check with Chance Wolf from Wolf's Magic. I use the chicken sword in almost every show, and can tell you from experience that with a fresh battery and a fresh deck of bicycles the cards go flying high and far.

While it's probably not exactly what you want, I once whipped something up using a cordless drill. That sucker shot the cards insanely high!

Depending on your budget, I can help you spec an industrial DC motor with the needed performance.
I'll start with this: do you have a certain voltage or battery size you need to stay within? If the power-in can be increased, the power-out can be increased. Also, what are the space (volume) constraints? If power and volume are negotiable, we can get you any result you desire! I do custom engineering work, let me know! |
