Hi there, Has anyone seen an effect where you take a coin and it magically passes through a TIC TAC box. I know of a magic company in Newcastle, UK, that sell a version but you can't hand out the box with the coin in it at the end.
Your help in finding a supplier would be fantastic. Thanks Harry

There have been marketed versions of this, but an anaysis and preliminary ungaffed handling appears in the Art of Astonishment volumes. The main advantage here being that you get a glimpse at the way Paul Harris approached this problem, which is always a fun ride.

I miss out on a lot of great effects, all my own fault I'm sorry to say. I type-casted myself a long time ago as a "serious" guy who performs magic, instead of an entertaining guy who likes to amaze. It's the way I learned to hold myself, act, and project my magic. A little too one dimensional sometimes. Although I dress very casually, and have a light personality, often bordering on inappropriate behavior, my "game face" projects an image that doesn't allow me to get away with tic tac effects, or coins in fruit, or sponge balls on any kind. On a good night, I'll kill with mysterious looking coins, old wooden dice, skeleton keys, etc., but as soon I try to move into more humorous terrain, even just to do something that involves foam or plastic, or anything besides silver, brass, copper, or playing cards, I can see my audience-acceptance meter nose dive. Really, if you look carefully, you actually see the needle fall.
I need to do a Pat Boone style image change one of these days so I can play with silly and fun stuff like so many others can. You know like, leave Moon River behind and come out in biker leather and Risky Business shades... and still hold some fraction of my spectators attention (Yeah, I know Andy Williams did Moon River, but I'm just trying to make an analogy here, and I can't remember any Pat Boone songs off hand.) Seriously Yours, Mike |

Tric tac...
I was with Bob Chesbro when he invented this trick more than 27 years ago.. yeah so the coin can't be pulled out of the box by the spec but it is beautifully done because it can show the coin visually appear in the candy box.. the coin is in one hand and in an instant you see it land in the tic tac box... I looked to see if I had an extra gimmick to send you but so far can't I'll keep looking.. you can get one direct from Bob and if you send me a message I will help you get in touch with him.. the trick is similar to his famous coin in lighter... though the spec can't take the coin out you simulate its removal and can hand the tic tac box out... he made this for non smokers... ending clean is worth the trade off in my mind.. marty |

Harry,
You answered your own question. The magic company in Newcastle UK, sells them. They will be very happy to have you as a customer. Wildstone, Why can't you take that attitude in your presentation? Just say it time for a tick tac, or "Hey Man" you need a tick tack after that booze. Pull out the candy and hand him one. Take his coin and go to town. Just a thought. |

You mean this is like the lighter ... very good! Yes hurray for non smokers. Now these tic-tacs are more than just a 'social coup'!

I do try, from time to time. It seems that I'm a believable magician, who can actually melt coins through things, and vanish them a moment later, at will, of course. For some reason, even though I am a funny guy, well, people do laugh in my presence, so I'm assuming that I'm a funny guy, I can't make the performance leap into lighter comedic material. At this point I think it's because I'm too aware of it, and push it too far too fast. As soon as I feel that I'm losing people, I snap back to standard mode.
I like the way I handle things, don't get me wrong. I can sense that people are entertained and enjoy the material, and I enjoy myself. I just want to add more dimensions to that character. I like to watch and read Jay Sankey's material to get some ideas on bridging some of the gaps between comedian and Mandrake. |

Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic DVD has an effect where a coin passes into an empty card box and also into a match box that is in the card box. Somewhat on the same lines as what you are looking for.

Vladimir markets a version. It is available at http://www.wladimir.org This version looks great, and in my opinion is far superior to the version Paul Harris created.
Although not on the topic, there is a great effect by Ben Harris taught in the April 2002 issue of Genii (i think it was April), where you make all the tic-tacs vanish from the box! Owen |

The version in AoA is the only one I know of, but I can't see doing it any other way. It is very simple. My only problem is making sure the coin doesn't get buried into the tictacs prematurely, if you know what I mean. Anyone have a solution to this problem?

I prefer the Paul Harris version. Have done it several times and have always gotten a good response.

Hey, Wildstone,
I'm betting that people are entertained and smiling/laughing with you because your persona is tough. So if you kept the humor dry you could cash in on their tension: Example with the tic-tac box: "You know in HELL ... the stench is unbearable. That's why I always have these (bring out tic-tac box). What? are you laughing? Give me a quarter! (Vanish it) It's gone (It re-appears in the box) and it's mine now." I have no idea if this would work for you and actually I wouldn't want to say, because you even scare the heck out of me. ;-) |

I am working on a version; I hope I am not re inventing the wheel here.
Mine uses no special coin, no magnets. Nothing. The pack is clearly shown empty at the beginning and then is given to the spectator at the end with the coin still inside to keep as a souvenir. The coin cannot get out of the opening. The only way to get it out is by removing the sticker and removing the whole top. Set up takes only a few seconds and you are ready to roll. Any of the ones that are out match these criterias?
Yours,
Ivan |
