I have a very small setup I can fit in a bag, so it's pick up and go to the LINQ casino across the street and go.
IF you are in a spot where you can befriend other performers you can give them a tip to watch your stuff. |

Just make a funnel out of newspaper. Maybe add a little milk as a chaser.

There are ways to reduce the need to go to the toilet/restroom during busking. I am typically at my pitch for 3 to 4 hours without using the toilet.
I start by cutting my fluids right down for a couple of hours before going busking. And I use a toilet/restroom just before. I turn up at the pitch. I take minimal fluids during my pitching; just a mouthful or so at a time. Sometimes if I need the toilet, I will have somebody keep an eye on my gear while I am gone, and hope they do that.
The presentation makes the magic.

Not sure what you are asking, but I myself usually go to the bathroom.
A quick line I use for when people ask me where the nearest bathroom is: "around the corner next to the soda machine you'll find a tree or a bush, you can take your pick". Sometimes they give me a confused look and I'll follow up with "this is South Carolina mam, it's okay - you're allowed to do that down here". -JoeJoe

Farmers Markets are a great place to busk and almost always have a restroom. Boardwalks at the beach have restrooms. Ice cream shops have restrooms. Restaurants have restrooms - although some require purchasing something in order to use it.
Not sure If I've ever busked where a restroom wasn't available so I guess I don't have a good answer. As to how to hold your spot while you are attending to the "call", I've seen performers leave props at the spot and only take the money bag/hat/box. Not sure it is a good solution, but it seems to work. I don't think I'd recommend reducing your fluid intake so you don't have to go- especially on hot days the fluids are what keeps you healthy in the sun. |

Taking water with you is great, just don't gulp it. Hydrate before, and when you take the water with you, swig it. If you are gulping down your water you'll probably have to go a few times within the hour.
I have busked in some hot Vegas nights and it's gotten me by for 3-4 hours without using the restroom. |

Ok, guys. I hate to blow your mind. Here is my great tip to stop having to go. Ice Breakers make a sugar free sour candy. This will make your saliva glands keep your mouth wet for shouting at your crowd without having to gulp water.
Now I know when it is hot in New Orleans, sometimes we will go through lots of liquids before having to go 3-4 hours later. It ll depends on how hard you are working to sweat it out. |

Hi FrankieF, welcome to 'the Sidewalk'! With 10(!) responces, so far,you can see,..this Topic is close to the 'hearts'of a lot of Performers!(the Heart sitting right above the Bladder.)
Reading the responces, however,I've gotta tell,"Most of the folks are beating around the bush!" I think, with 308 Posts, more respect should be given(!).Now being an 'Open Forum',we can't get into the nitty gritty but we can talk without leaking too much. Ever notice that many Sidewalk Performers use Pouches and where the Pouches hang??? ja. Pouches are often sold as, "Water proof",Inside, as well as Out.",...hmmm. Pouch-advertising often states,.. "With our Pouch, easy loading. NO drops." Pouches, amongst the Pros, are refered to as; "Gibeciere". Say that, real fast with your best French accent. {you be amazed how similar it rings with:"...take a peeeeee." ja. Now Frankie, like I said, this is no open forum. you have to put the pieces together yourself. By the way, ever notice how older Performers wear a Pouch IN THE BACK, as well(!). Biologie , Physiologie. 'Magic',..... ,welcome to 'the Sidewalk' p.s.: a little Historie, as well(!!). A little known fact: Sponge Balls were FIRST used by Street Performers(!). Poorer,..Street Performers who couldn't afford water-proof Pouches. jaaaaaaa! |

Things are getting bad for me. I must have one of those tipped over bladders. I can't even read this whole thread without a pee break.

I haven't busked in some time, but lately, I've had a problem recently which may be attributed to the medication my doctor has put me on where I've been using the bathroom every couple of hours.
When I was busking, I would use the bathroom at the nearby bookshop before starting. And again after I left. (I don't do a full day's set.)

On a serious note, the reason I asked is because I have a pretty decent amount of stuff with me. (My table, bucket, etc.) So if I'm out busking all day it's kind of hard to break it all down and carry it with me and back.
I had a feeling I would get this response, but hey "Magicians Helping Magicians". |

If it is a problem, then I would consider cutting down on the props used so that I could get to the bathroom easier.
I remember "Matthew," the busker in Las Vegas, complaining that the MGM that he was working outside of wouldn't let him use the building in any manner, he couldn't eat at any of the snack bars and he couldn't use the facilities (i.e., restrooms.) I mean, he COULD go across the street to the other casino (forget next door, the MGM is HUGE) but it still wasn't fair.

Camping stores sell a heavy duty plastic bag filled with, wait for it... slush powder. Well, basically the same thing. One brand is "Port-a-John". The top has a harder plastic ring to hold it open as needed and a ziploc-like closure. If you can find a private place, this is pretty good. They pack very small before use.
