Hello Rick
May I ask what have you added to this effect ? The handling and basic effect is Nick Trost 8 Card Brainwave The display of the backs of the cards was I think created by Marlow The premise of phschology and writing on the cards is a handling by Jay Sankey . He wrote on the cards Words such a PICK ME The effect has always been a good effect but I am struggling to see what has been added to justify it being an effect you created which you could sell ? When I create an effect that I learn it's been published before I let it go .. Just happy to know I had the same idea if too late Andrew |

Rick references and credits both Marlo and Nick Trost in this routine. The subtleties and nuances of what he has added are enough to make me very happy with this purchase. It is a very practical and fun routine I will use in the real world. I know the past and I'm happy with his improvements.

I didn't recognise Rick without his headphones. Seems like a cool effect with correct crediting.

Hello Ray
As you own the effect and have mentioned both Trost and Marlow what about Jay Sankey ?? Many people have applied the two main principles to new effects . The key being a new presentation and use of the cards . The premise and use of the cards seems to be very close to the effect Sankey published . Therefore if he is not mentioned in the credits , then perhaps the level Of checking for originality could have better . Unless Ray you have seen the Jay Sankey effect how can you judge what is original to Rick ? I do not doubt Rick's handling and performance is excellent and a great teacher Andrew |

I don't get the price tag with a few touches to a trick old as hills...

Since he didn't mention the Sankey routine I'm guessing he wasn't aware of it and came up with this independently but you would need to check with him on that. I feel that any creator must perform due diligence when crediting and marketing an effect. On the other hand, if it's one thing the café is always good at, it's debating the relative attribution of anything published. I always thought it was to credit things properly but it times it seems to just be exercise in ego to prove how much more one person knows than the other. My comments were simply that I found value in his routine and handling. Nothing more. YMMV

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this one. Great presentation, solid method, fun for everyone involved and you can make it your own. I've decided to use blank business cards instead of playing cards because I don't want it to look like a card trick.
I would take one point off because you have to have a table to perform but other than that, this is a worker |

Thanks for posting this, Magic Maniac. I was on the fence but now I think I'll pick it up while it's available "on sale."

On May 4, 2016, magic maniac wrote: I'm kinda suprised rick didn't design this using either blank deck or biz cards. Cause he talks about using red and blue cards and how this looks to magicy. Well then if that's the case why use cards at all. Now I know that I can use whatever I'd like and I will use either double blank cards or biz cards. This effect calls for blank sided cards and completely removes the magic trick implication. So regardless of what I think (who am I anyway) nice effect and worthy of a purchase for the $9.95 price. I don't have this, but the method was somewhat obvious to even a non "card" guy (myself), but I do like change in the props (from 8CBW to a marked/unmarked card, and better to business/blank cards as suggested above). I think it does get away from just another card trick (good for us non-card guys )
Ray, or others: Can you give a little more detail in your review? Such as how many phases? are they performed differently in some way (as implied in the ad), are there many subtleties in the handling, or more in the patter? Is there good interaction with, and response from the spectators? Does he address audience management (especially the "grabby" ones). I do think it is a bit pricey for a single trick; I want to get a sense if its worth the initial price of $10. thanks; John

This is a nice presentational improvement on Nick Trost's popular 8-Card Brainwave effect. If you're like most then you were probably introduced to the effect from Michael Ammar's ETMC series. While the trick was easy-to-perform it never quite got the reactions that I had hoped for, and so I abandoned it and moved on.
Rick's presentation has a far more interesting hook because all the cards have written messages on them and so it plays like a light-hearted game of matching psychological wits with the spectator. I made up my set with blank cards, which as other have said makes this feel less like a card trick. Sure, it's another $9.95 for a trick that's not going to blow your audience out of the water but it is entertaining and will serve you well as an engaging opener. |

So.. It's brainwave.. ?
I guess that's what he meant by "when you see a magician performing a magic trick, they probably didn't think of it. I did." Disclaimer: I'm not saying adding presentational flair is wrong, nor do I want to debate the ethical issues of commercializing it. (Too much to talk about, not suitable for this thread.) I just wanted to bring up that comment (from P&T FU), which seems a bit ironical in this light.

Saw the trailer & knew exactly how it worked( learnt this count at least 35 years ago).
However, I liked Ricks presentation. I immediatelly marked up some cards & tried it & of course it worked. Then I bought it to get the FULL PRESENTATION & any aditional tips as the little bits are what make an effect great. I like it & will certainly try it out. I allready have several ideas for a comedy psychological test with my own sense of humour & choioce of phrases for the cards. Pleased I got this as my brain is twirrling away with funny ideas. I also bought this for Ricks handling and whilst I know the original, the fun phrasing on the cards I feel really adds to the effect.
I've changed the words on the cards slightly, the ones I use are (written on blank face cards): X :) (smiley face) Pick Me Don't Pick Me ? [Left Blank] Heart Shape Yes! No! FREE BEER |

I feel like people missed this in the description:
Special Message to Advanced Magicians If you’re familiar with the Olram Subtlety and Trost’s work on it, you’re ESPECIALLY going to LOVE the verbal/psychological ploys that Lax has added to Marlo’s classic count. These subtleties not only allow you to achieve an amazing, streamlined effect with ONE deck of cards, they also allow for an organic presentation, where the spectator isn’t just picking a random card; she’s trying to resist a barrage of psychological influences. THANK YOU TO: Justin Flom, Bizzaro, Nick Diffatte, Ryan Stock, AmberLynn, Jake Roeber, Front Row Mo, Marlo, Trost Yes, it uses old moves, yes it looks similar, but he put out a pretty solid routine with it. $9.95 is a great price too if you're new to these moves. Also, chill with the name calling guys. No reason for it...

Obviously many of us know the principle and history of the effect. It was never one of my favorites, but Rick's hook makes all the difference. I'm trying to make up a list of clever phrases that will make it work for my style. Also, Rick does mention a tip in the Olram Subitly that I hadn't seen before. It's the little things that make the difference. Chamberlain, would you mind pming me on how you eliminated the second x card? Oh, and why do they have so many Scottish accents in Game of thrones?
