There is always temptation. But I generally manage to restrain myself.

In a word, yes.

One of the reasons I became interested in psychic reading is that I've always found people to be very fascinating. This fascination with humanity in general motivated my life-long study of basic anthropology, psychology, and theology (i.e., the study of people -- who they are, what they believe, and why they are the way they are).

Most people are interesting and mysterious in their own way, and I love the challenge of observing what makes them tick and speculating as to what unique direction in the road of life they are taking.

So, I suppose I am always "reading" people in one way or the other.

I have to agree with Joe... in fact, one of the main things I stress in my writings, etc. on this topic is learning how to watch and study people as well as your environment... these are powerful tools as well as "humbling" e.g. it can overwhelm you as to how "potent" such subtle skills can be when it comes to empowering you in life as a whole.

I teach many of these techniques and observational skills to sales people in team building styled programs. It amazes them "just how psychic they are" when I reveal "the secrets of psychics" to them... from that point forward, it becomes a competition between the sales force, as to who can read a patron best... lots of fun!

TRUE STORY!!!

I don't do reading much at all! I'm green, VERY GREEN! I've only done it maybe 5 times in my life time.

The last person I did it on I just did a few stock lines. My main one (from Ian's book. I do it under the guise of being able to read people perfectly just by talking to them for a few minutes in an SAR type of style. I mention SAR and me being a technician and prove that I know more about her than just about anyone she knows even though she hasn't told me squat) is "It's obvious to me for some reason that your subconcious associates water with a terrible trauma". I don't use those words but the basic idea. THe way I present it depends on the person and makes it seem MUCH more specific than it actually is. It's all verbal acrobatics and such, as most of you should know.

The last girl I did it on told me that she had been raped in the shower! Basically no-one else knew and she just opened up and went on and on about it. She needed serious help! Since she's never been able to open up to anyone, it was a huge experience for her. The day after I met her she told me that she was in love with me! She had been engaged before but has dated more guys than she can count and she was only in love one other time and that was the guy she was engaged to.

Imagine my shock!!! We're still together, BTW. She's remained in love with me all this time and eventually I fell in love with her as well!

A couple of weeks BEFORE that I had met another girl to whom I did the exact same thing. She told me that it was raining during her grandmother's funeral when she was 10 and it was the most traumatic experience of her life. She was 20 and told me she hadn't cried ONE TIME since that funeral. It had caused MANY psychological problems including a sex addiction that was VERY strong (no jokes, it's a horrible thing for a young girl to experience! And yes, I did not succomb to temptation at ALL!) and a continual drawing to boyfriends that were terribly abusive and hurting. She had never been in love before and didn't think she could.

BUT, because she was able to open up to me and tell me things no one else knew, she told me the day after I met her for the first time that she had fallen in love with me AS WELL!!!

It's an incredible responsibility that goes with the knowledge of cold reading. I want to become better at it, though. All I know are some stock lines but I'm horrible at personal readings (figuring out lines for the specific person based on your experience with them in the reading or whatever.). I've avoided cold reading like the plague because of the psychic connection. But because of the SAR slant I want to get into it big time, especially since I'm new to the stage arena of mentalism (did close-up) and want to add a QandA routine.

I do believe, humbly, that I'm a natural at it in many aspects. As far as presentation and everything, I was able to turn a few stock lines into an unbelievable experience the few times I've used it! THink what I could do if I knew more?

PLEASE NOTE: That with ALL of these people I did NOT attempt to take the place of a therapist which these individuals REALLY needed BADLY! I advised VERY strongly that they seek one and hold them accountable to getting one. I care for these people and they need BIG help!

Emotional/sympathetic connections are not unusual. I've actually had "regulars" that I've sent to other Readers because they become co-dependent and make you their guru. It is possibly one of the biggest challenges anyone doing full time Readings will have to deal with. It will also take it's toll in your own personality, making you angry, defensive and even vindictive at times.

Learn as much as you can about counseling and human behaivour. Learn how to "turn" circumstances via subtle suggestion. More important, learn how to "see" how such things are affecting you and keep yourself in check... from not buying into another person's psychosis.

Many people, like these two you mention, aren't looking for Mr. Right but Mr. Rightaway... they are needy and not ready to live life on their own. Because you could look inside them and "see who they really are" they will have the tendency to "imprint" themselves on you... in short, BE CAREFUL that you are not setting yourself up for a world of hurt... I'm not trying to demenish your relationship, but I am saying that you may want to take some good long looks at everything so it stays healthy!

I completely agree! No, it was just a fluke circumstance that we ended up together. But you are right on in everything you say! It does take it's toll on you psychologically. That's the reason I couldn't be a psychologist. Too many people's problems, couldn't deal with it. That's why I don't want to become a full-time reader.

Might be a good idea to carry around some business cards of various professional counselors in different specialties.

I'm curious Jonathan, does your girlfriend now know that you had used cold reading techniques? If so, what was her response?

No she doesn't know. I figure as long as I have credibility she'll take me more seriously when I suggest therapy. What started out as fun would end up in me telling the truth, her getting mad and not trusting me, and rebelling against any advice I had given her.

Not good. I'm getting out of it. It's not good for either of us to be together. She is getting therapy, but I don't think it's a good idea to get involved romantically. But when a HOTT woman tells you she's in love with you, it changes how you rationalize things. Smile

I did a few psychic fayres but stopped them for the above reasons. A lot of the people who go to these events need therapy. I actually worked as a therapist for a number of years and knew that a few sessions of therapy would help them much more than than a "pychic consultation".

I still do cold reading for fun and just as interested but for me personally it doesn't sit right to charge for it(just how I feel about it). However there is no better way to meet or chat up women. Being able to "see" inside someone can create a deep rapport with that person. Deep rapport can also induce trance like states that can make that person more suggestable.

Thats why I believe you have to be really careful what you say to certain people and should always be encouraging and positive in your readings. Or you could be opening up a can of worms.
