Hello, I wanted to participate in my country's talent show. I wanted to do my close up act that is mostly originally created by me, and for the finale I always wanted to do a switch with an assistant. I remember watching this years ago of Lu Chen's performance from 5:42 to 6:46 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB_INMxyres
. I do have a custom method for me. Is there any advice I might consider for so, or anyone I can should consult ? It will be like America's Got Talent Style with a camera man close up on the table and all. Thank you. Oh and I will not respond kindly to disrespectful comments which are pretty common on this forum.... |

If you have no experience doing illusions, you shouldn't try to do one on a talent show. So, pick 3 or 4 absolutely mind-blowing close up effects, and perform them. Rather than try to learn to do something which takes a hell of a lot of rehearsal to do well. Illusions are easy to do, but hard to do well. The timing is everything - make them too long, and you will bore the audience. Generally speaking, there are far more mind-blowing close up effects out there than there are mind-blowing illusions. |

Thank you Tally_NSA, I PM'ed you.
Is there any illusion plans perhaps for that. Looks like I'll consider rehearsing and practicing this and keeping it as a plan B. But It's definitely something worth dreaming about to perform lol . |

I'm not sure of your question. Do you want to do the "piano" close up effect with the custom cards or the illusion of the vanishing piano? The piano isn't difficult, just expensive. I always encourage people to try original effects rather than to just copy something you've seen someone else do. The method could be similar but use something that would be unique to you!

LOL none of the above, I have an original close up act, I wanted to do the Switching places with an assistant. Not on the piano, just having the end result of the assistant the one doing the magic while I'm talking and I re-appear somewhere else (in the audience or so).

Its a talent show with live audience they will see everything or am I missing something? Your audience reaction won't be what you hope

I am sorry to inform you, that a exchange of people as seen in the video, cannot be done for a talent contest. Nice wish, but I have to say the audience was in on the effect, as seen by the audience poor applause, and the expression on their faces. Therefore, the judges would see everything happening. The audience was prompted to applaud.
I would also guess there was some trick photography as well during the card display, as his arms never left the screen. This was a television effect, and only can be presented on television. Exchanges of people and vanishes has not been revealed, as much depends on the stage setting and number of people on stage. |

As Bill mentioned, this effect was designed to fool and entertain the TV viewing audience rather than the audience in the theatre that night. He is correct in that the studio audience will not be fooled by the exchange. Therefore, if you are performing in a talent show (with out a camera audience) there will be no effect.
To clarify though, it is not trick photography, just camera angles and tight camera shots that create the effect of changing the performers. The left and right hands leave the screen at different times and they are substituted one at a time.
