Hi Everyone,

I would like to set up a "Fright Night at The Old Fort" for the coming halloween. Something like a haunted house but using some cool magic and illusions. Not just people jumping out of the shadows but something more chilling and subtle. The whole thing would have a Voodoo, Seance type theme.

The location is an old (250 plus years)fortified plantation house in the Caribbean. The building is perfect it is built of stone and has a medieval castle like feel. It looks great at night when just lit with candles and the flickering light from the fireplace.

The area has a lot of history with regard to escaped slaves, pirates, Carib indians (originally thought to be cannibals) and of course european settlers. Locals are very very superstitious and many strongly believe in Jumby (a voodoo/boogey man type character).

My questions to you all are:

Has any of you had experience in organising any thing of this nature? If so what where the most effective devices that you used?

Does any one know of any good sources for Ouijii board or Tarot Card magic?

What are your favorite Tarot/Ouijii effects?

Whate are your favorite voodoo style effects?

I am thinking of buying Haunted Illusions (the book) is this worthwhile?

What are your favorite easy to build illusions?

I have never done any seance type stuff before. I am kidding myself that I can get something together in just a few months?

I would be doing this for fun rather than profit and have a fairly limited budget (damn wives!!). Any advice any one can give would be most welcomed.

If any one is experienced in this field and interested in coming down here I would be very happy for you to stay for free at the hotel. Unfortunately I am unable to pay airfares Smile

Thank you all for taking the time to read my post.

Regards

Firstly (not to sound like a hustler, but) If you want the ultimate Ouija check my post in the For Sale area under the name of Ouija...

Tarot effects... I'd start with the works of Stephan Minch and Jim Magus so as to get a foundation. There's also some excellent material to be found in back issues of Syzygy and you may look up a routine called "The Devil's Picture Book" @ Magus Magic (Stephan Magus) in the UK... I believe Kuffs set a link to that set somewhere around here. He also has some good notes on doing a Seance/Haunting type program.

Along that line of thought I recommend getting the "Manifestations" material from Lee Earle and Rick Maue's "Book of Haunted Magick" (and just about everything else Rick has to offer... wonderful mind!)followed by the twisted works of Gene Poinc and Ed Solomon.

In that I have haunted more than one big house in my life (the Bed & Breakfast industry tends to be my calling...) feel free to PM or Email me. I'll help out as much as possible. But, these resources should prove more than sufficient at this time.

Oh! Go to Rick Maue's web site and take the virtual tour through the Chamber... it may give you some ideas.

Ian,
You might want to check out the e-zine Visions (www.online-visions.come) for my Bizarre Bazaar column.
There are some ideas there that may work.

Yes! Nearly forgot about you Peter (which is no easy thing to do...)... You and Shane both have some very excellent ideas floating around over in that brain pool.

NO RUBBER BATS!!! That was the crux of my idea, ah well back to the drawing board.

Thanks for all the info. I will begin to source it all and check it out.

Darmoe - your Ouija board sounds great, a little out of my price range in this instance though. Do you have any online video of it in action?

Peter - thanks for the link I'm heading there right now...

Video of the Ouija will be on line in a couple of months (not in my control). The thing is, all you will see is a pendulum or borrowed item, etc. moving to the letters WITHOUT anyone touching said device (other than maybe holding one end of a pendulum chain). As I've stated, there are no threads and the items used are borrowed in some instances (depending upon what options the buyer adds to his/her order).

The price is "high" because we don't want a lot of them out there... it's that simple. However, we do have some other effects for hauntings for in around $100.00 ech. Touch base with me via Email.

Greetings Ian,

Haunted Houses! Spook shows! My faves! I did Haunted Trails in Austin, TX for 5 years and we did a lot of special effects - indoors and out. I'd be glad to chat about some of the things we did there that you might be able to leverage. (You can see it here http://www.haunted-trails.org)

Are you doing this as a charity? Insured? Sponsored? Got a budget? Got volunteers? What is your target audience?

Another great master of this genre is Rick Maue and his Haunted Chamber. I think he has a video out you can snag that shows off his chamber and the subtle horror he created there.

Two books worthy of your time would be Rick Maue's Book of Haunted Magic and Eugene Burger's Spirit Theater.

Greetings,

Okay - here is a list of my favorite haunt magics:

* Floating table (classic method with two people) - We had gypsies who were prophesying the doom of our brave party.

* Tarbell Tarot deck - Free selection of the Hanged Man card by a blind old woman who could pluck out her eyes (they are easy to finger palm if you leave the optic nerve on...)

* Black art tables / principles - Amazing what you can do in a dark field with a table and a piece of black velvet. (Triple black natch.)

* Peppers Ghost - In poor lighting, a $40 piece of lexanne works like a charm.

* Mirror glass - "Reach into this jar of spiders and remove the vial..." Big jar of daddy long leg spiders. Fun.

* Variety of games - Each year we used a mentalism effect as a game that the group would invariably lose. Ah memories.

Will write more as time permits,
Sam Haine
