Just asking for an opinion - does anyone out there who has the original "Pure Thought" with Reminiscence and Lift think the addition of those 2 effects is worth the $345 USD that book is now selling for on ebay??
I think I'm going to get the later edition without these effects, because the mortgage still needs to be paid this month - but I was just wondering if anyone thought I was making a big mistake.... |

Mr X,
'Pure Effect' is an excellent book in its own right and as ThoughtThief has already mentioned, all this talk has raised these two effect to mythical proportions. They are wonderful effects, no question, but Derren has choosen not to release them to a wider forum for his own reasons. Why would any self-respecting performer want to add what are clearly Derren Brown signature effects to their repetoire? Isn't there enough of this clone mentality around? No offense intended but shouldn't we all strive for orginality? If you read through this thread carefully, both ThoughtThief and Ian Rowland point anyone still wishing to replicate these wonderful pieces in the right direction anyway. Forgive the rant, but in a nutshell, do I believe the 1st edition is worth the price tag? For the above reasons, No. Best Regards Harry X |

Three hundred and forty-five bucks for a spiral-bound magic manuscript? (Even an excellent one like "Pure Effect", 1st edition.) And they say there's no money to be made in magic!
Mr X - what I strongly recommend is that you get the video "The Derren Brown Lecture" from the shop International Magic in London (I think their website is http://www.internationalmagic.co.uk off the top of my head.) The video is exculsive to International Magic, unless you can get a second-hand one on the net somewhere. In this superb lecture, delivered to an audience of magicians in London, DB explains the concepts behind his brand of mentalism and demonstrates a number of the routines included in "Pure Effect". He explains them all in the video *except* Lift and Reminiscence - but both of these are performed in full. If you watch the video several times and really think about what Derren is saying and doing, and watch the two effects again, and use lateral thinking, you will probably realise how the effects are achieved. (Even if you don't, there's no shame in that - after all, the methods are *supposed* to be well disguised, but you will still have gained a valuable lesson in mentalist thinking.) If anything, I think that the video is even better than the book "Pure Effect", in that you see everything performed with real people so that it really comes to life. However, the 2nd edition of the book "Pure Effect" is definitely worth getting. Derren has replaced the two missing effects with some really marvellous satirical pieces making fun of cheesy ads for magic tricks. It was so funny that I was literally rolling on the floor in pain from laughing so much. The great thing about Derren is that he has kept his wicked sense of humour, even after having achieved fame and success. |

Harry X and Dr. Omni -
Thank you both for your advice. As soon as I finish paying off the credit cards for my other recent mentalism literature purchases , I will get a copy of Pure Effect and the video from International Magic. I'm not looking to copy anyone else's work - just looking to read as much as possible. thanks again! |

Maybe the buyer wants to perform lift and Reminiscence and not just want to know how it is done. Buy having this book he has the right to perform it. Right?

This has come up a few times - the First edition was not properly published, just distributed in limited number. He removed the two chapters for publishing and asked that the two routines NOT be performed as they are in his active repertoire. Generally those wishes have been respected, certainly be pros, although one could also argue that if they're out there in print then they're out there. But Hackmonkey, knowing that he doesn't want them performed, and that they're his trademark effects, do you really want to put them in your stage show? No offence meant.

Kind of a sad situation. The Pro's—who may be better suited to perform these routines—will not perform them, but the novelty-seeking magicians apparently will.

How very sad. They'll kick themselves when they discover the methods for Lift & rem.
Mind you, it could be Mr Brown buying up all of the circulated copies

Hi all,
OK, here goes. I have the first edition of Pure Effect and I'm going to put all of the inquiring, sad, lonely and unoriginal minds out of their misery and I don't care who objects. Here is the method for lift. First you sit the spec down and you.....Hey, who's there?.....Hello.....What the......Who are you? Get the hell outta my apartment..... Hey buddy..... No....No.....Oh my God....Derren get your hands off my throat....Aaaaaargh! |

I'm fine guys. My throats a little sore but I got to meet the great man face to face even if it was only his astral self. In all seriousness, most people will be suprised and mildly dissapointed at paying such a ridiculous amount of dollars for DB's first print of PE just to discover the method for those two effects. Doc Hilford has covered the method for reminisence and as for lift I've seen Derren perform that in two different ways so far. One was exactly as it appears. As for his PK style touches I wonder if anyone else spotted the method he clumsily uses for the live stage version? If so please don't discuss it openly on this forum. Out of professional courtesy I will not discuss or reveal what I saw so don't PM me about it.
Thanks for your compliment Kuffs. I'll be in touch soon. |

I heard Derren has a very fast moving trained tarantula which rushes on from back stage up the chair, creates the touch sensation by walking down the arm towards Derren ending up being sleeved in his velvet extravagance.

Everyone seems to be assuming that bidders were looking to find out how two particular effects are done. Certainly that may be a good reason.
But the first edition was very limited and is rarer than the original JARRETT book, and much rarer than the HARBIN book. If nothing else it is an investment. |

Kris,
Your news is old gossip. I'm afraid the Tarantula was sacked. One reason was it kept mugging the audience just before it was sleeved and was getting more laughs than Derren. However the final straw came the night it bit a spec during the PK routine and whispered to Derren" Get outta that magic boy." |

So *that's* why that girl looked so upset in the Blair Witch effect (Mind Control 1)....And there I was thinking it was plain old hypnotism. If the tarantula's looking for a new employer, I can definitely find a role for him in my act.

I am currently acting as the Tarantula's agent (I was approached by him after he heard about me plugging his talent here)
So if you want to do what Derren does contact me. He doesn't have much time free in his schedule because of his 876 children so its first come first served I'm afraid. Fees are based on an hourly rate with reductions for rehearsals. Regards, Kris Sheglova
