Can anyone recommend a download or streaming video that does a good job of teaching a retention vanish?

There are so many variations of this sleight that it might help to know the conditions of use. e.g.
the reveal of the vanish is ideally separate for the fake or false placement. What leads into and what comes after the apparent placement can dictate which method to use, or to use at all. Also, since part of the power of such a sleight is psychological, learning from a video may not be the solution to your goal. for example, Vinny has a unique approach on video that is "best" in the sense since there is NO finger movement of the taking hand, and the fingers are spread with the coin in full view for ultimate flash. (Marini Hide Way) However, it is not ideal in all effects since often the performer does not even wish for the observer to remember that transfer at all.

All of the major beginner coin dvds teach it pretty well (Roth, Ammar, Stone and Jones). I would recommend getting one of those as even if you are beyond beginner, you will learn something new in all of these. I felt Roth teaches it best but I like all of them.
After that, the Encyclopaedia mentioned above is the best as it teaches many variations so you can choose your favourite. |

If Eric's video is pure SoH, then I'd say he can claim to be one of the best alive performers of the RoV vanish...

Hi all...
Stepped away from the Café for quite a bit... Still love magic.. Coin magic specifically.... My question is related to this new YouTube thing.... Without being rude... Wtf... Is this not just strait exposure??? I assume the rational is well "if the individual is seeking out the info, then they have a legitimate interest in magic..." Is this the case? I'm really concerned about this.. Any insight would be wonderful... Sorry for jacking your thread... Buy something from Roth or Rubienstien...

Shawn,
I believe the later posts are suggesting buying a instructional video/download, which doesn't seem like exposure. Sure, you can find a lot of stuff online, but most of them are (a) poorly taught, (b) not especially good in the first place. A lot of people don't care, which is sad, but there's not a lot you can do. What, specifically are you concerned about? On the topic of Eric Chien's COIN, that looks stunning, though (very) slightly misleading when they say "one coin", and that coin changes from a Silver to a Chinese coin, and the style makes me think it's not going to be any gaff stuff. Tiny compared to most of the misinformation these days, though. I'm definitely interested pending some reviews. |

Kainoa Harbottle has some work on the retention also, he's got a lot of material on Reel Magic Magazine.

Frankly, the retention pass used on COIN looks pretty much like Mickey Silver's, which he never published. The performer does it very well. Larry Baronowsky also has a similar vanish which he published in his first book. Speed is used to do the vanish, which allows you to do some of the visual switches you see. But that doesn't make the vanish better, it just allows you other options. Speed doesn't mean better.

Dr. Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coins Sleights will provide you with superb retention vanish techniques.
My technique known as the URV (Universal Retention Vanish) can be found in Ch7 of my book 21st Century Coin Mechanics. There is a slow version which I most often use for a simple vanish, and a rapid version of the URV which allows for some dramatic instant changes and vanishes as well. More info and video clips can be found at this site Larry |

I can attest to Dr. Mike's "Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights" DVD having a number of great retention passes, all very well taught. Also, Larry Barnowsky's URV in his book "21st Century Coin Mechanics" is a fantastic move! Excellent and very deceptive once you learn it and get it down smoothly. You can't miss with these two references.

A truly deceptive, smooth, natural retention pass continues to be an elusive skill for many coin magicians! I think everyone would agree with me that there are LOTS of very clear "step-by-step" instruction of the sleight; but the steps look almost nothing like the "fluid" real-time move. It would be great if any instruction videos show the actual sleight shown in "Super Slo-Mo", and multi-angle!
Karl Hein's teaching videos on False Shuffles and CatchUp get close to that type of videos. It's much easier to see how a sleight SHOULD look at speed, with the real TIMING used as the sleight is executed. The Super Slo-Mo allows to see the fluidity and timing that is lost in full speed video. Does that look like any teaching videos you know? Blessings, Steph

Super slow motion is no better than slow and pausing at certain spots. Its the timing that will make the move. In my opinion, pausing to demontrate certain hand positions and different angles such as is done in the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights is the best way to teach a move.

I don't know, but this is pretty darn good as to the potential of this thing. I'm just sayin' but I don't even think we think about it like this…
…But this is very creative , shows how the needle keeps moving, and how progress continues to come from the big, small, and all of us. Just like God planned it.
