In the Deep American South, ghost stories are as much a part of life around the dinner table as eccentric relatives, Sweet Iced Tea, and fried foods including everything from frog legs to Reece's Cups (no lie). There are many ghosts of the metaphorical if not supernatural kind in the South, and they are more often tolerated or even beloved by families, rather than feared. One such spirit is the one whose abode was shared by the family of renowned storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham (who passed from this life in 2011 and so far, hasn't haunted anybody). For those of you in the bizarre magic community in other parts of the U.S. or around the world, this may be a refreshing change; NPR took a look at our local, Southern, phantasmic friends a couple of years ago:
http://www.npr.org/2014/10/31/360337448/......-stories "I collect ghost stories," Windham said. "Now, the nice thing about ghost stories, is that you don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy hearing a good ghost story." -from the article in the link

I actually have this book, first edition when it came out. I was raised in Alabama, so this was a personal book for my family and myself, being Southern and all. The stories are wonderful, along with the illustrations and photographs. I was not into magic at the time, but it has influenced me since. I was sorry to hear that Kathryn Windham had passed. Maybe she now converses with 'Jeffrey'.
Thanks for the link. She was right: "You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy hearing a good ghost story." |
