Hello, everyone! I've been having such fun with the Mismade flag lately. Not sure why I avoided it for so long. But anyway, I don't like using a change bag. It works well for the routine, but as Dick often says, it's just so "proppy." So I've been pondering another way to do it. I perform a half dyed Hank routine that I think, with some tweaking, could become an "in the hands" Mismade flag routine. I'm thinking 2 or 3 dye tubes but always showing the audience empty hands.
My question is this: is there any way for me to get smaller Mismade flag silks made? Rather than the standard stage/parlor version, smaller silks to use with a dye tube? I can picture myself placing the red and white silks (dropped the blue) into my hand, and the "flag" emerges from the bottom of my fist as red and white. Switching due tubes would be easy with all of the laughter in between. I guess I'm trying to combine a color changing silk routine with the Mismade flag. Any ideas on how or where to have silks like this made? Thanks for any help with this!! --Frank |

Why not use a larger dye tube and a paper tube to push the silks/flags into?

Madhatter Magic's Mismade Flag Deluxe uses 12 inch silks and the flag is only 18" x 24". http://madhattermagicshop.com/magicshop/......_id=9561
You would only need an oversized color changing silk gimmick for the last change. I make my own cc silk tubes from plastic mailing tubes, as shown in my "Puff-Away Mis-Made Flag" found in the "Tricks With a Pop-Away Wand" in The Wizards' Journal #29. I'm using the Pop-Away Wand by choice because I like being able to blow the silks out of the tube up into the air high above my head, but I can conceive of performing the same routine strictly in my hands as you suggest.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your ideas. So basically you're thinking this is possible with larger dye tubes rather than smaller silks. I have the traditional size Mismade flag props. The vernet dye tubes I have are obviously waaaaaay too small. Perhaps some palmos or larger dye tubes. I wanted to avoid the audience seeing any props at all. So no large cylinders or bags.
Ill do some searching online for larger dye tubes. And you think I can definitely fit the large flag silk (plus another small silk, remember) into one of these tubes? Thank you again, Jim, Michael, and Dick! |

I just sold one Braun dye tube last month. I have one left. If you are interested, PM me the sizes of the silks and flags that you have, and, I'll check how many silks the John Braun tube will hold It's a brass tube with a sliding plunger, not a tape divider.
You roll up an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper. and load in the tube. Do the routine, and, let tube slide into a hat or black art well (!!!) or ??? It's so easy, even I can do it. If you have the Rice Encyclopedia of Silks, the handling is written up. I could copy it for you if necessary. I'm asking $27.00 and $5.00 postage (CONUSA). No one makes the Braun tube anymore.

Thank you Dick! I get what you're saying. I perform the Duke's Dye Silk routine for one of my shows using a rolled up Frankie Ace poster. I just palm out the gimmick and grab a magic wand.
I have shows today but the minute I get home I'll measure my silks and pm you. I really appreciate it! |

You might also be able to borrow techniques from Harrison's Blow Dye (I think that's the name).

I stumbled across this today, it may or may not be what you are looking for. For the money it could be a great resource for ideas for an in the hands handling. http://www.laflinmagicstore.com/product-p/mdvdbmmfd.htm Best of luck Mark

Thank you so much, Mark! Looks like Dukes Dye meets Mismade Flag! I wonder if he sells smaller flags. I'll have to check this out. But either way, I do like this better than a change bag. Would be especially wonderful to roll up a piece of paper, go back to the case for a wand, make a switch, and come back out with a secretly loaded cylinder!
Thank you again, my friend! |

Frankie,
Pop Haydn has a terrific large hand-held dye tube that might just be what you're looking for (he uses it for a 24" color change). I have used the tube several times (fairly new to me) now and really like the tube. http://www.popsmagic.com/store/p67/Jim_Riser_Dye_Tube__.html Bruce |

Thank you Bruce! It says out of stock, unfortunately. I'll have to see if that's permanent. I hope not.
Thanks again for the help! |

This could be a perfect solution, no visual gimmicks, and it is easy to do. It took me a few hours to figure out how to set it up for strolling. Now I use it all the time.

Thanks Baldini! I appreciate it.
I saw that. I wish I could take that mini flag to a seamstress to make me two Mismade flags the same size, one red and white, and one reversed. I'm really looking for the full flag routine. I ordered the smaller Mismade flag version. Turns out I was using the larger one. I think I can definitely do the junior Mismade flags with 2 palmos. In the meantime, I've been using Tommy James' Triple Treat wands (red white and blue) as an opener to the trick, then I have a duplicate red wand/tube loaded with the 3 Mismade flags and a drop gimmick. I do the routine after switching the red tube (they think it's still empty) Then I do the full routine Thank you all for continuing to help with this. |

Seems like you're off and running. It might be worth mentioning that Norm Barnhart has mismade flag routine on his DVD that doesn't use a change bag. It doesn't seem like it's exactly what you're looking for though, as he does away with the gag flags (so, it's not exactly "mismade" flag, at all, although I guess that was his starting point). Anyway, might give you some ideas.

I've combined several techniques to develop my own handling of mismade flag. I now need to take it to the next level as a finale and veterans tribute in our Branson show. Can anyone recommend a poem or a speech about the colors of the flag?

For a finale on my Miss made flag I let the child keep the flag I purchased 100 pieces for just a few pennies each. It's the one that you normally see attached to a small wooden stick at the checkout counter at most stores during the Fourth of July but mine is obviously without the stick . And I use some sort of tube I don't know the name of it but it has a false top to store the switched flags and I simply palm away and dump it in my case as I go to grab a magic wand.

Late to the party, but if you do the classic dye tube wrapped in paper you can use a color copy of the Declaration of Independance. This is recognizable from a distance and allows for patriotic scripting about different colors representing qualities that are important to our nation. And so on. Magic words could be from the Pledge. Every time you say it wrong you get a wacky flag. When you finally have all the colors and have the kids all say the words for you, the flag comes out right.
