Been looking at Brett Sherwood engraved cups and balls as well as some sets on RNT. Was wondering if there was anyone making something as ornate in Okito boxes. I've seen some inlaid with wood, but I much prefer metal for the weight and feel. I know there are some moves where too much texture in the wrong areas would make some moves difficult but It would be nice to have some coin boxes that look "classy". Might also make it an easier sell as an antique box I keep coins in as per making it seem less like a magicians prop.

The Okito coin boxes were not designed to be fancy. They were originally pill tins. I've seen my dad older customers have their name on one to make it look like the old style pill tins. He would
engraved them "Bill's Pills on the cover. A lot of magic out there don't need a face lift, they just need to be left alone IMHO. I've noticed you've made similar posts, I don't want to be brash but I have to ask. Do you even know what the hell it is your actually looking for? Sincerely, Mad Jake Jr. |

check it out. These ornate, beautifully engraved okito boxes were custom-made for me some years ago by Tom Bartlett of Oklahoma who is a member of the Café. Fortasse |

That's an impressive Okito Box collection. I've got 4-5 sets, but how many is that?

That's just some of them. The photo was taken some years back. I've since acquired about another two dozen or so. I have about 70 0r 80 Okito boxes in all.

I think you should make the Okito boxes look as ordinary as possible. The more ornate they are the more attention that will go to them and that is probably not what you want..

I had a hinged Okito box with lock made by a jeweller and presented it at the FFFF. My alternative to engraving had been to get a (industrial) shell cameo glued on the top (very inexpensive) which could be made on the lid of a classic Okito Box whether engraved on the side or not. I also offered Alex Conradi a sterling silver lid fitting perfectly an Okito box on xhich a sculptured dolphin (about the same height as the box itself) was soldered. The additional height of the lid allows some different one hand moves and prevents the box from looking like a magician prop Along this line, when you bring an Okito box in play, bring it with tic tacs in it and pour them on the side. There are two reasons for that : it doesn't say "coin box" (which screams magician prop and even if people don't know how it works, there is nothing magic about the effects then), and it uses Fred Kaps' principle : "if you want to show something to be empty, empty it from whatever is in there initially"!
