I have a small metal scarab. It looks really cool. Other than as a pendulum, I'm not sure what to do with it.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance

I don't know about an effect, but your story-line could definitely center around Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Gold Bug'.

I highly recommend tools such as ESPoe and Poe's Spirits of the Dead by Parlor Ghost and ER Perkins available from Lebanon Circle. They will give you dozens of possibilities for effects, and the scarab can easily be worked into a story-line about the Gold Bug. In fact, there are bug cards included that will probably match nicely.

You can turn the scarab into a real-life beetle.

There is a good routine in Capriconian Tales, but if I remember correctly it requires a real scarab, but that would go hand in hand with what Philemon said.

Also I love the idea of transforming it into a real bug. I have some real bugs in acrylic blocks as part of a kids' science kit that I was going to do a PATEO or Kurotsuke with.

In the book Daemons, Darklings and Doppelgangers, by the legendary Tony "Doc" Shiels, is a routine called Scarab in which a scarab is turned into a live beetle during the process of a card trick. I had a friend that used to perform it to great reactions and screams.

Found some scarab "monte" shells at Stevens Magic Emporium for doing three shell game. Pretty sure the golden scarab could be produced from underneath one as a "final load" effect.

I wrote 3 routines using scarabs in my book(s). Malediction (a scarab amulet transports a curse from one victim to another), Scarab (a dead scarab lives again but for a very short moment) and Scarab2 (a Stone scarab amulet turns into a real beetle).

You could turn the scarab into another bug or have it appear to glow in some way then have it vanish to some impossible location.

There's also the 1897 horror novel The Beetle that's fertile for gathering material. It actually outsold Bram Stoker's Dracula back in the day.

As I've said, I'm rather late discovering the Bizarre magic genre and am "playing catch-up" developing a library. If I could only find a copy of "Hauntiques"... I'm enjoying Capricornian Tales very much; just ordered some items to go with some of the routines inside. I do love the way the routines are presented in the text, leaving much to the imagination and creativity of the performer.
