Videos like this circulate among the public. I, (who don't perform ANYTHING resembling a Russian roulette routine) do a gig the following week and I can't get a woman to take a card, or hold her hand out to hold a coin because "All magicians are jerks." And are we not going to mention the worst offense of all by this guy in the video.....what the F is up with that hair?!?!?!?

This effect is no longer allowed in our showrooms at the Magic Castle due to a performance that went awry awhile back. The magician (a very talented and seasoned performer) harmed his own hand rather than a spectator's but the audience still got more than they bargained for.

I wouldn't ever perform a hand/spike routine because I hate watching them. Even if it turns out ok the whole time you're worried that it won't.

What an idiot! So irresponsible! It borders on the psychotic to put her hand there instead of your own!
This made me laugh though!... Quote:

When I did my nail roulette on Penn & Teller, the producers wanted me to have a 'safe phrase' when everything was made 100% safe. Once I said it, they knew it was okay to carry on. If I did not say it, even if the trick was made 100%safe, they would have cut in with some technical fault excuse so that I could start again.
So for those who feel they now can't make it 100% safe every time they place the nail in the bag, bear that in mind if you want to do it on TV. While you do not have to give away the method to the presenter/s, you can give the producer/s a phrase you will say only when you have made it 100% safe. On live TV, you might not be able to re-shoot but you will also not run the risk of injury to yourself or anyone else.

We probably all can see how a producer of a magic-themed TV show would not only understand, but require such a phrase. I'm not so sure that such a requirement would ever extend to other producers, unless the magician himself or herself suggests it. Logic would tell us that any magician using a method that is NOT completely and guaranteed safe wouldn't think to mention something like this.
I'm sure that many of us have done morning shows and the like, especially in our own locale. These are usually a big rush-around and not a lot of thought is, or can be, put into any single four-minute segment. In any case, I think what you have brought up here is an excellent concept. Perhaps it can catch on, but I doubt that we'll see it anytime soon in shows not dedicated to magic performance. Bravo to the P&T team, though! |
