One of the greatest joys I get here on the Café is reading a response from Danny that he had to go look up a word I used in a post. ("Sagacity" being the most recent example.) Danny's cool about it, and knows that I'm not trying to make him (or anyone else) feel inferior; it's just the way I talk (and write).
My lovely wife, Marlana, uses a vocabulary quite similar in extent to mine, but the responses from her coworkers are markedly different: they seem to resent having to read an e-mail that contains "steadfast", "abdicate", "breach", or "squander" (to name a few examples). It's all the more disheartening when you realize that she works for a school district; oughtn't the employees there, of all people, understand the value of learning new words or ideas? Sigh. |

I know for a FACT neither of you would do it to make anyone feel interior.
Personally I enjoy the learning process and any opportunity to do so is just that. An opportunity. Please relay to Marlana that being resentful is completely a them issue. Certainly it is not her. Anyone in a school district without the need to continue to learn is baffling.

I have no dubiety with your utterance and believe you do not need concurrence for desideratum.

School districts deal with the public. The reading levels of the public range from zero through PhD. Clarity and inclusion are cardinal virtues in such an environment.

Perhaps virtuous when dealing with the public. But I assumed the emails were to coworkers.

One of the privileges of my job is that nobody ever accuses me of using a highfalutin vocabulary.
Come to think of it, the only one who regularly corrects my English is S2000magician. It's true. LOL! |

Vocabulary is also a matter of accuracy. For example, once when someone said a planet is round, I replied that it's spherical. He complained why I use a big word when a simple one would do. But I explained that "round" refers to a two-dimensional object,i.e., a circle--whereas "spherical" refers to a three-dimensional object such as an apple or orange. That's why half of a planet is a called a hemisphere. So he acknowledged my accuracy.

NASA, btw, uses both words when describing suns and planets. In fact, it seems to favour round as none are perfectly spherical. http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/sci......latesun/ "Scientists using NASA's RHESSI spacecraft have measured the roundness of the sun with unprecedented precision, and they find that it is not a perfect sphere." http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/planets-round/en/ "While all the planets in our solar system are nice and round, some are rounder than others. Mercury and Venus are the roundest of all. They are nearly perfect spheres, like marbles. But some planets aren't quite so perfectly round."

If the planet is square then is its atmosphere round or square?
