Hi there,
I was wondering what it takes to become a member of the IBM? I know you have to have the interest for 2 years. What else do I need to do? Do I have to become a member of a ring? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

At this point all you need to do is go to the website and fill out the application. https://www.magician.org/join-the-ibm/join

There is no requirement to join a local Ring. However, if you have one relatively close by, I would highly recommend it. I live two hours from mine, so I don't have a chance to go except maybe once a year (or less).

How does IBM define an interest in magic.
I am new to practicing magic however I've been interested in magic for years as a lay person. Would this make me eligible to apply for membership of would it be more appropriate for me to wait two years from when I actively started to learn magic? Apologies if this seems like a dumb question. |

Hi rboyd! You remind me of me 3 years ago. As a beginner magician, I felt odd applying to an organization that not all that long ago was a by invitation only club. Since I am in the states, I went ahead and joined SAM instead. The truth is that you would be more than welcome to join IBM so long as you are respectful and not into exposing magic. The big organizations used to serve as calling cards and door openers. Now they're just another means of supporting and advancing the art. I think it is important to belong to one of these organizations because it honors the living heritage that is magic. Most everything in magic is built on the work of the magicians that came before you. I enjoy literally paying my dues to those that came before me. Not to mention that there is a lot of good info in the magazines.
