Does it take to ..no, just kidding. I've been here a while now and noticed from time to time how this or that coin wizard also plays piano or guitar. From a physiological (and probably neurological as well) POV I see a strong similarity 'tween these skills. Now, to clarify, I am talking about musical expertise of the digit variety, e.g. keyboard playing, fretboard playing (guitar, bass, voilin...).
So, if I may ask my fellow musicians to raise a hand and be counted. Oh, I should have mentioned I play guitar and bass. On a related note, I also translate for the deaf in ASL, which includes fingerspelling, relatively coordinated finger control required. Thanks for reading. |

Vinny played flute as a kid and destined to a career in music. Then he discovered magic.
I had musical talent and lessons - but no inclination to practice.

I learned it all from Marion Boykin. Well,.. actually, not ALL.....of it. BUT,....one of our 'money-lines' IS an Effect from Marion(!). The Crimp Change. I take a coin out of our basket, and pass Marion's smile on to the rest of the world. One of our strongest 'songs',....! Funny, as a Musician, I've noticed folks really,...really apreciate Magic. Maybe Magic and Music 'tickle' the same peoples(?). ,...maybe, it has to do with my piano-playing,...(?). hmm? Smiles, and pleasent greetings out of Witzenhausen! We're enjoying a great 'cherry year'! Life's good! (,,..thanks Marion.) gallagher,....(and Monika) p.s.: Vinny 'the Crimp-Chimp' actually studied at Juliard School of Music. Violinists and Sopranos(!) naa, just a joke! Flute. |

I have played music all through school as a percussionist. As Andy Young pointed out I think having a background in music helps with timing and rhythm control. I also play guitar and piano. I have always maintained that I wanted my coin routines to flow like well and a background in music really aids that. Also by playing guitar and piano for quite awhile my fingers had some good strength to start out with coin magic.

Many years of classical piano studies as a youngster. Self-taught guitar and drums. Graduated from Berklee College of Music where I studied orchestration, jazz composition and film scoring. Then taught there for a couple of years. Extensive worldwide touring, performing on keyboards, guitar and vocals with various pop & rock bands.

Found this and thought it would be appropriate. I have always believed this to be true, he just put it into words that I did not have. |

I play and write music for the piano. The sheet music of one of my songs is in a magic book I wrote called the Book of Destiny. The song title and book title are the same. The music and lyrics are heard while the card effect is performed.
I did know a Chicago magician who didn't go to Juliard but did 6/8 time at Joliet. I think he was incarcerated for a hernia. Larry |

I play trombone, conduct, and teach music for a living. I also compose and arrange music, mostly big band jazz. Magic is my hobby.
I've found my music background informs my magic too. Not so much timing and rhythm, but how to break down moves into component parts and practice effectively. It also doesn't hurt being used to being in front of an audience and talking to them. I've often heard of coin magic described as "jazzy" in that it can be improvisatory and highly spontaneous. It's only been recently where I've started to feel comfort enough where I feel I can deviate from a routine and branch off on different directions. As a jazz improviser I feel a similar thought process between the two. Dave |

Wilktone that was very well said. I love that idea of jazzy magic. I am not so confident in coin magic to be so jazzy. At especially unique performances when the spectators are just reacting in a very fueling way my card magic can said to be "jazzy". After the performance I always feel so good and uplifted. Its the same feeling when I am jammin with my buddies and we just start going in tangents and playing whatever we feel.

Piano, classical guitar, electric guitar, clarinet, flute.
I often say that magic is like music. Except that one wrong note won't won't ruin the piece, but will ruin the trick, and I've met considerably more magicians who performed a trick they couldn't do than musicians play a piece they couldn't play... P! |

Music's actually my full-time career. I play a total of 13 instruments (more if you count different types of guitar as different - I don't): Guitar, Bass, Violin, Viola, Cello, Drum Kit, Piano, Trumpet, Cornet, Tenor Horn, Harmonica, Organ, Banjo. I'm not sure how much of an effect it has on magic because I'm very much an amateur/hobbyist magician, though I do find that it doesn't take me long to learn a new sleight. Although, I approach magic like I do music, so if I get a new effect I'll usually practise solidly for a couple of hours a day until I get it down.
